For fourteen years now, The Glenlivet has been consistently releasing special editions for whisky enthusiasts around the world. Its Single Cask Edition series is particularly sought-after, destined to be a collector’s edition with its limited quantities and bottled without chill-filtration to maintain that unique aroma. This year’s The Glenlivet 18 Year Old Single Cask Edition has just been released in Malaysia.
Cask #8032, the cask from which The Glenlivet 18 Year Old Single Cask Edition was drawn from, has only 276 bottles. It was drawn from American oak, ex-bourbon second-fill Hogshead barrel. This barrel was just one of the many sitting in the distillery, biding its time to be discovered by the craftsmen at The Glenlivet. And after 18 years of maturation, it was.
Bottled at cask strength (60.5% abv and without chill-filtration) the spirit is made for the strong at heart. By doing so, it locks in the distillery’s signature smooth and fruity flavours. Also, it allows its drinker to have the closest possible experience of drinking a dram straight from the cask.
On the nose, once you get past the alcohol fumes, the 18 Year Old has delicate floral aromas with a slightly minty and fresh fruit aroma. The first taste of the whisky gives you a creamy mouthfeel with initial flavours of butterscotch, followed by sweet, citrusy flavours of honey, stone fruits, and mandarin. Although it may come off strong at the beginning thanks to its high ABV, the Scotch is surprisingly delicate in flavour overall.
According to The Glenlivet master distiller Alan Winchester: “Embracing the cask’s original character and flavour, it offers one of the purest Single Malt experiences available and the finished product is a whisky that our founder, George Smith would be proud of.”
Cask #8032 is exclusive to Malaysia and can be found on TheCask.my retailing for RM1,988 per bottle.
