Biodynamic wines are created by farming all components of the vineyard as a whole ecosystem of its own. Every part of the vineyard or farm works harmoniously in a self-sustaining manner. In that essence, natural wine bar Puro KL is like its own self-sustaining element in the ecosystem that is REXKL. Inside the community of arts and artisanal products – including a dim sum joint that has been in existence in Chinatown for decades – Puro KL exists and thrives.

Co-founder Tan Meng How and his partner Gerald were previously in the local wine distributing industry and saw firsthand how the wine scene was in the country. Sure, people may stick to their comfort zone of Cabernet Sauvignons and the pricey Bordeaux wines, but the world of wine is so much more than that. They wanted a place where wine drinkers can explore and gain more knowledge on the world of natural, organic, and biodynamic wines. Hence, Puro KL was born.

Puro KL
Puro KL is located on the first floor of REXKL.
The location

REXKL seems to draw all things artsy and artisanal towards it like one hip magnet. The building that was once an old cinema not only houses an art gallery, but also cool eateries, shops, a craft beer bar, and now Puro KL. “There was never an alternative venue for Puro,” said Tan. “REXKL invited us to start this wine bar and we never hesitated even for a moment.”

“We were intrigued by the synergy that REXKL – a holistic community hub – offers and how things can interplay in a bigger ecosystem,” Tan elaborated. “In REXKL, you can eat, drink, and play. Puro is happy to be part of all these…we don’t just sell our wines, we also render our service and contribute towards this community (that is REXKL).”

Located on the first floor of the building, Puro KL has an open concept and is welcoming. Sit by the bar and admire the dried flowers adorning the wall behind the bar, or lounge in the chairs. Pick up a book about wine – there are many available there for your perusal. If you’re feeling peckish, head downstairs to buy some dim sum or feast on ribs by Ticklish Ribs & ‘Wiches.

“If you’re looking for a classy and refined wine experience with 90-pointer wines, we’ll disappoint you.”

The wines

Puro KL isn’t your regular wine bar. In fact, you probably won’t be able to find most of the wines you’re used to at your regular wine bar. Here, you’ll find a wide range of organic, natural, and biodynamic wine. For the uninitiated, find out the difference between all three here

Beyond those three types, the bar also services sustainable and low-intervention wines. You can order by the bottle or by the glass, but know that if it’s the latter, Tan has incorporated the Coravin technology to maintain the balance of the wine while at the same time keeping it fresh. Should you be unable to finish your bottle of wine, worry not – you can keep it in the bar, preserved by Coravin and ready for you the next time you head on over.

During your time at Puro KL, be sure to expand your palate with the many wines across different countries available there. So keep an open mind, open up your palate, and you’ll be able to expose your world to more interesting wines.

“Rather than serve wines that are rich, flawless, and ‘correct’, we seek out wines that are expressive, earthy, and – yes – comes with visible sediments,” declared Tan. “We’re not mainstream – we’re revolutionary. If you’re looking for a classy and refined wine experience with 90-pointer wines, we’ll disappoint you.” By the glass, there are variants such as the Roquefort Petit Sale wine made of a blend of Clairette grapes, or a Petit Pittacum Mencia wine.

Puro KL uses Coravin to preserve the balance and freshness of its opened wines.

Drinking wine has always been synonymous to having a refined palate. Like whisky, wine connoisseurs are of a different level altogether that most beginners find intimidating to even approach.

At Puro KL, you don’t have to be. Tan, who will be at the bar often, is on hand to explain and give suggestions if you’re unsure of what wine to have. Depending on your preferred palate and what you normally like to drink, Tan will give his recommendations – which are almost always spot-on. Even if you’re there simply to enjoy some wine, Puro KL is a chill place to hang out with your friends.
