Ever wanted to know what it was like to cruise around town in the all-new Lexus UX 200 Luxury? Read on to find out our full review of Lexus’ latest crossover SUV.
For years now, Lexus has been introducing state-of-the-art vehicles that touch on elegance, beauty, and raw power. Looking at the bevvy of cars that Lexus has put out over the years, it’s hard to imagine anything less these days. The all-new 2020 Lexus UX 200 Luxury is the epitome of what a luxury crossover should be like these days.
Lucky for us, we had the chance to take it out for a spin around town for the day (Ed’s note: Prior to the movement control order, mind you).
It’s hard not to say that most crossover SUVs look very similar. Outside of the obvious emblem, most designs share similar aesthetics and style. Thankfully, Lexus knows a thing or two when it comes to that.
The first big, noticeable change you’ll find in the UX 200 Luxury is the aerodynamic tail lights. It features a fin at the tip and goes into one continuous line that tapers to a mere 3mm at the centre. Lexus was also capable of blending 120 LEDs into it, giving it a sharper, yet stylish look. But this is more than just an aesthetic appeal; in fact, this is to help regulate airflow and enhance the stability of the car during crosswinds and lane changes.
If you thought the rear was great, imagine the front. You’ll notice L-shaped LED projector headlamps that flank the spindle grille. These are daytime running lights but are not bright enough to blind the drivers ahead of you.
Upon entering, you’ll be greeted with Japanese elements that we loved in the Lexus LC 500h. Merging traditional Japanese craftsmanship with modern-day technology, its cabin just screams Lexus. Bringing its design language from previous cars, one can tell the level of comfort and luxury within the cabin space.
Its washi ornamentation on the interior trim finish draws inspiration from the soft grain Japanese paper. This adds a distinctive layer of texture and style to the cabin dashboard. For the upholstery, you’ll find sashiko quilting, a traditional Japanese quilting technique that is known for its strength and is often used in kendo and judo uniforms. The quilted leather on the seats was done by the Lexus Takumi craftsmen, who are renowned for their artisanal features and attention to detail.
The seats itself are heated and ventilated giving you greater comfort, especially when you’re stuck in traffic. Moving to the dash, one of the first things you’ll notice is the wirelessly-powered LED air-vent knobs, located right below the 10.3-inch infotainment display. Touching on that, the Lexus UX 200 Luxury comes with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Its audio knobs are also located on the handrest with a touchpad to control your entertainment options. And last but not least, the car has wireless charging as well as four USB ports to keep your devices alive in crucial times.
Being a crossover SUV, the Lexus UX 200 Luxury is compact, lightweight, and nimble. It runs on 18-inch wheels with a turning radius of only 5.2m. The car was made for urban city driving, allowing you to fully experience what the drive is like. At the core lies a 2.0-litre Dynamic Force four-cylinder engine. It offers 169hp and 205Nm of torque via a 10-speed Direct Shift transmission.
Given its compact and lightweight design, the Lexus UX 200 Luxury has a top speed of 190kph and goes from zero to 100 in under 10 seconds. Considering these aren’t magnificent numbers, the car wasn’t created to drive at breakneck speeds. Instead, the car was made for urban city driving, allowing you to fully experience what the drive is like.
Of course, be sure to drive it around at the right time; KL is notorious for having terrible traffic conditions, especially during the peak hours. Unfortunately for us, that was the case when we took the Lexus UX 200 Luxury around for a cruise a while ago. But during empty stretches, the car is capable of holding its own. It’s quick and agile while its handling was nothing short of amazing.
Lexus takes safety very seriously and the UX 200 Luxury comes with plenty of features for it. This includes the Pre-Collision System (PCS) that detects any potential frontal collisions; Lane Tracing Assist (LCA) that helps you in keeping the car centred in the lane; and Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC), which utilises radar and camera technology to help you maintain your present speed while following at a safe distance of the car ahead
For just, RM283,888, the Lexus UX 200 Luxury is all yours. With crossover SUVs gaining more popularity over the passing days, it’s safe to say that Lexus has set the bar, or at least for within that price range. It has everything you need to ensure that you have a safe, smooth, and comfortable drive every single day.
