British supercar maker McLaren knows a thing or two when it comes to creating road-legal supercars. There are already plenty of McLaren supercars and hypercars readily available in the market. However, there aren’t many in Malaysia until now. Eight months after its global debut, the McLaren 720S Spider makes its grand appearance in Kuala Lumpur.

McLaren 720S Spider
This is the latest iteration to come out from the McLaren 720S Super Series.

The 720S Spider is the successor of the 720S Coupe. What’s great about the 720S Spider is that it can act as both a convertible and a coupe, depending on whether you want the retractable roof up or down. As it is the latest iteration, it also comes with a host of upgrades to its design with the retractable carbon fibre roof being one of it.

You can now retract said carbon fibre roof when travelling at 50kph and it will be done in just 11 seconds. This is six seconds quicker than the McLaren 650S Spider while also allowing you to travel 20kph faster. In terms of its overall design, the McLaren 720S Spider is a lot more agile, sleek, and lightweight. This is due to the heavy usage of carbon fibre, especially at its core on the Monocage II-S.

Carbon fibre is the main component of the McLaren 720S Spider with the designated Monocage II-S.

At the heart of the McLaren 720S Spider rests the M840T 4.0-litre V8 twin-turbocharged engine, unchanged from the 720S Coupe. It’s mid-mounted to provide exceptional handling while producing 710hp and 770Nm of torque. Because of the amount of power it can produce, it does 0-100kph in only 2.9 seconds while 0-200kph takes just 7.9 seconds. If the roof is raised, the McLaren 720S Spider can hit 341kph top speed and when lowered, 325kph.

The interior is wrapped in luxurious black leather upholstery.

On the inside, there is a central-mounted 8-inch high-res central infotainment screen. This gives you full and direct access to the car’s inner workings like audio, navigation, media, and other features. The retractable roof panel is glazed with electrochromic glass, which can be transparent or tinted. This gives you the experience of an open-air nature without actually having to feel the heat of the sun.

Much like the 720S Coupe, the 720S Spider is available in the same three specifications — Standard, Performance, and Luxury. There are also two new exterior colours: Belize Blue and Aztec Gold. This is included with a palette of 23 colours, one of which is the Supernova Silver, a heritage colour that was first available on the McLaren 12C.

It is now available for order starting at RM1,218,000 before duties and options. The McLaren 720S Spider is a direct descendant of the McLaren 720S Coupe, but with a few shinier trimmings.
