After testing out the Dyson Lightcycle Morph for a month, I’m here to tell you if it’s worth it.

“You never know what you’ve had until it’s gone” is an all too cliche saying, yet it’s true. This statement, in fact, sets the tone for my coming thoughts on the Dyson Lightcycle Morph, the upgraded version of Dyson’s smart desk lamp. There’s also a standing floor lamp version, and you can read all about the specifics here

For the unfamiliar, the Lightcycle Morph is Dyson’s line of smart desk lamps that claim to last for over 60 years (and perhaps even more), automatically adjusts its lighting according to the hour of the day wherever you are in the world, and can even adjust its setting according to your age. 10 years ago I might have balked at this. A lamp is just a tool to shine light onto things — how smart could it get?

Alas, it’s 2021 now and the era of smart homes is not uncommon. We already have smart light switches, so why not a smart desk lamp? After testing the Dyson Lightcycle Morph a spin for a month, you could say that I’m now enlightened. Or rather, that enlightenment came after I realised what a difference it made when I didn’t have it.

Working with adequate lighting is a game-changer

We might be all about that natural lighting, but it’s important to realise that not everyone’s home is equipped with it. I’m lucky that my cosy apartment is filled with natural light, but I never did realise how much of a difference having focused lighting on your work makes, especially with productivity

According to science, cooler blue and white lights between 4,900 Kelvin and 6,500 Kelvin are great for working, studying, and concentrating on tasks at hand. Having a focused desk lamp aids with that, especially if the area of the house that you’re working in tends to have dimmer lighting.

Nonetheless, having focused lighting on my workspace definitely helped with my productivity. I was more alert and able to concentrate on the task at hand much better than usual. There’s a ‘Study’ mode preset on the Dyson Link app that will help adjust your lamp to the right settings.

An ‘Age Adjust’ option

This may be a wake up call to some, but apparently as we grow older, our light requirements change. Simply by adjusting my birth year in the Dyson Link app, the Lightcycle Morph will automatically adjust brightness of the Study and Relax mode. While I haven’t yet arrived at the point where I absolutely need a drastic change in light requirements, it’s worth noting that the Lightcycle Morph’s bulb is designed to last for 60 years, which means that the light itself will last even longer. Three decades down the line, you might be singing a different tune.

Everything is automatic unless you don’t want it to be

They say technology is making us lazier, but honestly, it’s just freeing up time for us to do other more important things. Why do something as menial as turning on the light or adjusting it to a warmer temperature as the sun goes down when you can have it done automatically via an app? All you have to do is set your current location once, and the Lightcycle Morph will automatically adjust its brightness and light temperature as the day goes by, according to your geographical location.

Of course, if you want to defy the natural laws of light and adjust the lighting to your own preference, you’re free to do so too.

It looks really sleek

Let’s be real — most smart lamps tend to have the same reinterpreted versions in a clinical design. With Dyson, it’s always a game-changer when it comes to redesigning a product, and the Lightcycle Morph is no different. Available in two colourways – Black/Black and White/Silver – the smart lamp combines both form and function. I say this literally because you don’t just get light from one source on the lamp. Yes, the focused lighting comes from the main light bulb itself, but when you switch the Lightcycle Morph to ambient lighting mode, you’ll see the stand itself glow with an inviting warm hue, perfect for after-work hours when you want to relax. According to the science of colour and lighting, warm lights make the mind and body more relaxed. That’s precisely what I need after a long day at work.

At RM2,499 for the desk option and RM3,799 for the floor option, the Dyson Lightcycle Morph is by no means an affordable lighting solution. But when you take into consideration the technology behind this marvel and the number of years it’s claimed to last (that’s RM41.65 per year, for 60 years), it’s a justifiable purchase. Plus, after using it for a month, I can definitely say I will miss it if it’s gone; as though a light has gone out in my life.
