There was once at a point of menswear history that wearing a suit with a pair of sneakers would be unheard of.
Yet here we are. The old stuffy rules of yore have been tossed out of the window as the occasions we find ourselves in naturally dictate that we demand a lot out of our clothes. On top of being stylish, functional, and well-made, it needs to be wearable for a host of different occasions — especially in Malaysia’s climate.
Italian menswear label Ermenegildo Zegna’s Triple Stitch sneakers ticks all these boxes. The versatile slip on has been updated for the brand’s fall/winter 2020 collection just as the brand marks its 110th anniversary in August.
Perhaps it is testament to how menswear has evolved over time to soften its stiff upper lip; these are by no means, your regular pair of kicks. Artistic director Alessandro Sartori has dug deep and completely re-engineered its usual salvo for casual footwear, fashioning shoes that are as lightweight as they are flexible. The results are white soles made from extra-light rubber while the uppers come in a range of materials.
Gone are the laces of your usual sneakers and in its place is a trio of crossed elastics that cross each shoe’s tongue. This not only serves to hold your foot comfortably, but also recalls the Italian label’s heritage for the three hand-stitches on a suit’s lapel.
These elastics sit on elegant fabrics and colours. Take your pick from grained calfskin to suede to supple deerskin in rich hues like beige, dark vicuna and red leather. Slip them on with a pair of tailored shorts for an easy weekend look, or wear them with a suit for a good night out.
