In the year 1352, Tommaso da Modena made a visual historical recording of a person wearing sunglasses in the form of a painting. During the 12th century in ancient China, sunglasses were fashioned out of flat pieces of smoky quartz and worn by judges in Chinese courts to hide their expressions while questioning witnesses. In 1929, Sam Foster began selling mass-produced, protective sunglasses at Woolworth stores at the beaches in New Jersey and Atlantic City. Since then, sunglasses have constantly been evolving as fashion accessories on top of being protective eyewear. There are as many stylish eyewear pieces out in the market, and then there is the Chopard Cannes Special Edition 2018 sunglasses — a work of artisanal craft.
For this year’s Cannes Film Festival, the team behind Chopard’s eyewear range, Italian eyewear company De Rigo Vision decided to create the Chopard Cannes sunglasses as a tribute to Swiss fine jewellery and one of the world’s most prestigious cinematic events. The sunglasses, available in both yellow gold and pink gold feature oversized round frames in a see-through tint that is currently all the rage. But turn towards the sides and you’ll see that the Chopard Cannes sunglasses are not your ordinary pair of eyewear.
Plated with 23-carat gold, the frames extend to the side spoilers which have an intricate lace pattern. This gold lace pattern has been recreated using the same techniques used to make jewellery and watches. Although the sunglasses have a see-through tint, they also have a mirror-like gold flash — all the better to check out someone with. The gold temples are slender with a subtle Chopard logo embossed onto them.
For such a classy pair of sunglasses, its wearer must naturally be an elegant woman. We sit down for a chat with Malaysian actress Siti Saleha to talk about her affinity with sunglasses and also the beauty of the Chopard Cannes sunglasses. Here are the things she loves about them.
You’ve mentioned that you love sunglasses. How do you fit them into your daily life?
I always use them to accessorise my outfit pictures, especially when I’m travelling. In fact, whenever I travel, I need at least two pairs with me just to match my outfits. When I’m in Malaysia, sunglasses are a must, especially because our country is sunny all the time! Then, they become a necessity.
What are your criteria for the perfect pair of sunglasses?
I need to know that I can pull them off. I’m very particular on this aspect because I know that I may not be able to pull off certain kinds of styles thanks to the shape of my nose. At the end of the day, comfort is key for me. I was pleasantly surprised to find that these Chopard Cannes sunglasses fit me really well on the first try!
How do you like these Chopard Cannes 2018 limited edition sunglasses so far?
I’ve always been a fan of Chopard jewellery, so I was really excited to see this pair of sunglasses. I must say, they’re really classy-looking and absolutely gorgeous.
What kind of outfit would you wear with these sunnies?
To be honest, I could pair them with a smart casual outfit or go all out and wear them with a really fancy dress. It’s that versatile, even though the gold latticework is so intricate.
What sort of woman do you envision being seen in the Chopard Cannes sunglasses?
A very sophisticated, elegant, and classy woman. I feel someone like Nicole Kidman could pull it off really well.
