Crystal clear skin through the day and night, even with the humidity.
We all know how unpredictable the weather is in Malaysia — it’s occasionally chilly but most of the time, it’s hot, humid and everything in between. It’s even worse for us with oily skin — how many of you have gone out with fresh and moisturised skin, only to turn into an oil slick in mere minutes? The weather may be against us, but not all is lost! In this article, I will share with you my review of SK-II’s best-selling skincare products for oily skin in situations like these.
Before we get into the SK-II review, you have to know about their signature ingredient, PITERA™. PITERA™ is SK-II’s proprietary natural bio-ingredient that was derived from a natural fermentation process of a yeast strain unique to SK-II. It contains over 50 micro-nutrients like vitamins, minerals, amino acids and organic acids. As you apply, these micro-nutrients get absorbed into the skin quickly, boosting its overall health and condition immensely. This unique ingredient very much resembles the skin’s Natural Moisturizing Factor (NMF) — an element that decides the restoration and enhancement of translucency, softness and smoothness. That is how PITERA™ is able to boost your skin’s natural functions, resulting in a transformation to Crystal Clear Skin!
Here’s a little info on my skin: it’s a combination skin type, with very dry middle area and oily sides. I’ve also declared myself as a victim of maskne, with multiple breakouts around my chin area. Some are scars, while others are still in the midst of healing, and I also have one that may be a potential acne that’s about to pop. Redness is also something that I can never escape from, and one of my biggest skin concerns. Read on to find out my thoughts on SK-II for oily skin.
My Routine with SK-II
When SK-II sent the world-known Facial Treatment Essence, the GenOptics Aura Essence, and the R.N.A Power Airy Milky Lotion for my review, I immediately incorporated them into my daily skincare routine. Prior to the three products, I was using salicylic acid as part of my regime, with hopes that it’ll clear the breakouts. However, by doing so, it dried up my skin a tad more.
With these additions, I embarked on a new skincare routine. On evenings, I start off with double cleansing to gently remove all the dirt and impurities that had accumulated on my skin throughout the day. Following that, I pour about 2-3 drops of the Facial Treatment Essence into my hand, and gently pat them onto my entire face. Next, I’ll go in with a full dropper of the GenOptics Aura Essence, using my fingertips to spread it on areas of concern, then the rest of my face. To finish, I’ll apply a thin layer of the R.N.A Power Airy Milky Lotion to let it work its magic through the night. I’ll also bring the excess products down to my neck area, because why waste them? During the day, I’ll apply sunscreen as the final yet crucial and compulsory step. While this is a simplified version of my usual routine, it is one that I am very pleased with, especially compared to layering ten different products on my skin, which is not exactly skin-friendly in our humid climate.
Results After Using SK-II for Oily Skin
Just two weeks after incorporating SK-II products into my regimen, I’ve already started noticing visible results. The iconic Facial Treatment Essence has always worked well with my oily skin and it’s no surprise to say that this is my favourite product out of the three. The texture is unlike a toner, but it gets absorbed into my skin very quickly while retaining great hydrating power. This is particularly suitable for those with oily skin as many of the more hydrating essences in the market comes in thicker consistencies and may feel a bit heavy on top of oily skin.
In my opinion, the best way to apply is by directly patting the essence onto my skin with my palms. This is way more effective than using a cotton pad — which only soaks up the essence unnecessarily. Next up is the GenOptics Aura Essence, SK-II’s best-selling brightening essence. Other than its key ingredient PITERA™, it also contains Plum Extract, which not only works to brighten skin tone but also prevents dullness.
This worked amazingly with my acne scars, as I can see the undesirable marks lighten with just two weeks of usage. Its texture is slightly thicker than the Facial Treatment Essence but still absorbent.
If you’re like me and you can see the shine on your skin just hours after application, you will love the R.N.A Power Airy Milky Lotion. Its name is fitting; an airy milky type lotion that is lightweight and easily glides onto the skin. Personally, I would avoid creams or even gel-creams as these do not sit well on my oily skin.
After application, the lotion was quickly absorbed into my oily skin, allowing me to enjoy the full benefits of this cream without feeling like it’s clogging up my pores. It is a cream that focuses on anti-ageing as it is — formulated with RNArchitect Complex that contains concentrated PITERA™ with hydrolyzed soy and yeast extracts. For long-lasting results, it works by plumping up the skin from within.
As we know, the way to get Crystal Clear Skin is not just solely relying on products, but lifestyle habits and changing them could make a significant difference to your skin. It could be something as simple as sleeping early and having enough sleep or reducing processed sugar and dairy intake — for example, switching your latte order to an almond-milk based one. As much as we love binging on snacks, it’s important to consume food that are nutritious with omega-3 fats, Vitamin C and antioxidants instead. Regular exercising and meditation work great physically and mentally as a clear mind promotes a healthy appearance as well.
My thoughts and review of SK-II
My overall SK-II Review: these three products definitely made an improvement to my skin tone and texture in just two weeks, the most evident difference being the appearance of lightened acne scars and spots. My skin texture has also become significantly smoother with my pores looking less visible, which I’ve come to realise whilst applying foundation. It glides on much smoother than before.
Since the range is so lightweight and easily absorbed, my skin did not produce as much grease as before and I would definitely recommend SK-II for all skin types, including oily skin. It could get a little shiny on the forehead, but that only happens at the end of the day. Even now, I am a little braver to go #BareSkin in public instead layering on foundation to cover my spots and scars. It’s all that I can ask for with just two weeks of usage, and I can’t wait to see how crystal clear my skin can be in the following weeks.
