These croissant bags are the hottest breakfast-inspired companion this season

Never, ever underestimate the hold that the Parisian lifestyle has on the fashion world.

If our fascination with the French could get us sporting berets, breton tees or even baguettes as accessories, it was only a matter of a time before their breakfast pastry become a staple, too. We’re talking about the croissant, beloved for its buttery taste and flaky texture.

Before, Instagram It-girls would simply take to posting a flat-lay from some fancy café in Paris. Their table would consist of a steaming cup of coffee (with an emphasis on its latte art), a freshly baked croissant, and their designer handbag. Now, those last two things have converged to give us The Croissant Bag, the latest must-have accessory for the summer.

You’ll recognise it by its crescent shape, as well as the many folds and layers that give it such a distinctive look. You can trace the trend to last year’s obsession with the similarly rounded moon bag, as well as the pillowy softness of Bottega Veneta’s coveted clutches. In fact, the Italian label is responsible for the rise of slouchy, shoulder bags that we’re now seeing everywhere on Instagram. Models like Irina Shayk and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley have been spotted with their croissants, and Bella Hadid has been quite taken by a vintage Louis Vuitton bag that has the same shape.

If you’re ready to embrace the pastry beyond the dining table, see below for our round-up of the best croissant bags you can shop now.

Here’s the bag that started it all. Bottega Veneta’s pillow-like Pouch bag has become a bestseller in its many forms, but it’s the croissant-shaped Shoulder Pouch that’s speaking to many with its ruched details and spacious compartment. Complete your outfit the with the Italian brand’s red leather and raffia sandals to stand out this summer.

If you’re still scratching your head over the term “croissant bag”, Nanushka’s Anja will clear things up for you. Folds and layers aside, the colour of the bag mirrors that of the beloved French pastry perfectly. Nanushka’s shoulder bag is also a more accessible and sustainable take on the trend, being made entirely of vegan leather.

JW Pei’s Gabbi bag is a feat of construction with its scrunched up handle and gathered body. It snaps close with a magnet, and it’s roomy enough to hold the biggest smartphone. It also comes in various colours, like this fun bubblegum pink, and you can easily collect them all because the bag is relatively affordable. Another thing to love about Gabbi is that it’s made from vegan materials, from the leather of the bag to the faux suede that it’s lined with.

Gia Studios’ mini bag looks like a sizeable scrunchie, and in fact can probably hold little more than that. But what the Vietnamese fashion brand failed to give us in practicality, it made up for with versatility. This lightweight bag, covered in ruched, linen-blend fabric, will pair nicely with your (future) brunch looks, your beachside ensembles, and even your party dress.

Another irresistibly impractical bag on this list comes from Italian label Rosantica. Its Croissant bag bears traces of the  brand’s beginnings as a jewellery label, especially in the crystal-embellished top handle. Other fancy details include a tassel and a detachable chain strap, which makes this puffy cotton bag all the more covetable.

Christophe Lemaire, the designer behind the elegant pieces that fill each Uniqlo U collection, has also taken on the French pastry with his modern and minimalist approach. Lemaire’s cult-favourite Croissant is presented as a more practical alternative to the others on this list: it has a wide strap that’s easy on the shoulders, and a zipped top keep your belongings secure. In this large version, it’s big enough to fit your iPad, and there’s even a separate pouch to slot your essentials in.

Fendi gave us the Baguette, so naturally the Italian brand has followed up with the Croissant, too. Its take is a decisively summery one, crafted from natural woven straw. (It’s one of many, many straw bags that are trending this season.) It has just enough space for everything you would take to the beach: sunglasses, sunscreen and your iPhone. Adjust the leather shoulder strap to get the right fit.

Louis Vuitton was doing this trendy shape way back in 2002. This vintage monogrammed leather bag is a favourite of Bella Hadid’s, who often sports it with other noughties staples like a baby tee or a tank top. Really, though, this classic bag can easily be styled with whatever you prefer — it’ll stand out just the same.
