Old is new again.

Vintage fashion is having a moment. In the past year, fashion brands have brought back archival styles to the runway, while celebrities have championed the vintage agenda by wearing rare designer pieces. Timeless fashion, it seems, is very much in.

Celine couldn’t have unveiled its Triomphe Embroidery Collection at a better time. The new line of bags, which are part of creative director Hedi Slimane’s Fall/Winter 2020 collection, draws heavily on the French luxury brand’s rich heritage. Their most defining feature is the Triomphe monogram: a 1972 design inspired by the chains circling the Arc de Triomphe, and later established as a Celine signature by founder Céline Vipiana.

Of course, you may recognise the logo pattern from Celine’s range of Triomphe Canvas bags, or the Ava handbag frequently flaunted by It-girls like Blackpink’s Lisa and Kaia Gerber. But the Triomphe Embroidery Collection offers a more handcrafted (read: luxe) take on the monogram.

Each bag features detailed embroidery in black, made with the finest craftsmanship in Italy. It’s no easy feat: in the case of the Horizontal Cabas tote, the embroidery took over 13 hours to complete. The other styles in the collection — the Triomphe handbag, the Tambour bag and the Vertical Cabas tote — are all just as exquisitely crafted.

The Triomphe Embroidery bags, which come in Celine’s signature canvas fabric, are also refined with calfskin leather trimmings, gold hardware, and rounded corners or oval leather patches. These details nod to the handbag styles of the ’70s, emphasising the collection’s vintage spirit.

Elegant adornments aside, the bags also boast functional details worth noting. The Horizontal Cabas, for example, proves to be an excellent everyday tote with its roomy, boxy silhouette. It also contains two pockets for you to store your essentials in. The Triomphe and Tambour handbags are just as convenient, featuring adjustable leather straps that let you carry each bag across your body or on your shoulder.

The best thing about vintage fashion is that it transcends trends; these are designs that are made well and will last forever. Celine’s Triomphe Embroidery line matches that description to a tee, and will surely be a charming addition to any designer bag collection.
