Get your reusable face masks from these local Malaysian designers

Wallet. Keys. Phone. Hand sanitiser. Face masks? Check. These are your newest essentials when heading out of the house.

Face masks are the hottest accessory anyone can wear at this point of time. In fact, it’s not as much as an accessory as it is a necessity to keep yourself and others safe. It’s only a matter of time that we made these face masks fashionable.

While single-use three-ply face masks were the gold standard before (they were near-impossible to find at a point of time) we’re now looking towards something more sustainable: cloth face masks.

Make no mistake though — cloth face masks are not a replacement for medical-grade surgical masks, they still offer some protection and need to be used alongside other preventative measures including social distancing and proper hand washing.

For a cloth face mask to be effective, it has to be made of tightly-woven material such as cotton and needs to include multiple layers of fabric. Some even have a little pocket where you can insert a paper filter for extra protection. Always wash your reusable face mask with soap after wearing it out, and never touch it while wearing.

Now that you’re armed with the proper measures on wearing cloth face masks, it’s time to purchase some stylish ones from these Malaysian designers. These include the likes of Khoon Hooi, Cassey Gan’s iconic prints, and minimal ones from Jovian Mandagie. Most of these designers use upcycled fabric from their clothing designs, amping the sustainability of your new accessories.

Cassey Gan’s signature bold prints are seen in her collection of cloth face masks, and the best part is that the placement of prints for each of these masks is unique. The brand’s masks are made-to-order and use 100% cotton material. For added comfort, the ear loops are adjustable — simply tie a knot according to your face shape.

Our local fashion great Khoon Hooi has also launched a series of structured reusable face masks, made out of upcycled fabrics and motifs from the brand’s archives. You can definitely expect some glamorous-looking ones. For those who prefer a plain and minimal style, check out the Sutherland series of face masks. The brand’s face masks have a dual-layer protection and has an opening for you to include a disposable filter. For a better fit, the mask also comes with a built-in nose clip and adjustable straps.

Not a fan of prints or textures? Then Bernard Chandran’s designs will be right up your alley. The local designer has fashioned two kinds of linen face masks in a myriad of monochromatic colours. These are print-free but stand out all the same in rich colours. Both masks are similar in design, except that one uses elastic ear loops while the other boasts an adjustable string design for a better fit. These are made with a sleeve to fit a disposable filter in between.

RM39.90 - RM45

Could the face mask be a future accessory of brides? We don’t know for sure, but we definitely wouldn’t mind wearing these gorgeous lace-overlay face masks from Celest Thoi. Available in a limited run, these masks come with 10 pieces of refillable disposable filters. Wash them gently by hand, or use a hot steaming iron to sanitise it. To place an order, send Celest Thoi a DM via its Instagram account.

Minimal yet with a touch of sparkle, Jovian Mandagie’s masks are perfect for the whole family — quite literally, as the brand produces face masks for both children and adults. Available in a range of colours and adorned with the brand’s logo in Swarovski crystal, the mask is comfortable and has a sleeve to insert a disposable filter.

RM30 - RM38

We rarely get the chance to wear batik print, so now’s a great time to don reusable face masks from Batik Boutique. Championing batik material shirts, the brand now produces cloth face masks from the same fabric — this means you can also match your mask to your shirt, if your heart so desires. The mask is made from 100% hand-painted cotton and features a 2-ply design with a slit underneath so you can insert some disposable filters. Until the end of June 2020, the brand is having a promotion where you can get a face mask for free if you purchase a men’s shirt from the shop. Just use the code DADMASK upon checking out.

Just like her fashion designs, Melinda Looi’s reusable face masks are bold, stylish, and colourful. Featuring three layers and a pocket for disposable filters, the mask also comes with an embedded nose wire and extra-long straps to a comfortable and good fit. The brand also sells quality PM2.5 filters and a portable UVC steriliser box designed for face masks and accessories. An added bonus — the steriliser box is shaped like an evening clutch.
