Another brand, another debut collection. One of the most highly anticipated debuts of the season is Hedi Slimane’s first Celine collection, which took place just last night at Paris Fashion Week SS19. Slimane took over the reign as artistic, creative and image director of the French label in January 2018. He shows no signs of stopping as he continues to fire up the brand to soaring heights.
Just recently, he released a brand new logo for the brand. His longtime comrade Lady Gaga, who was also at the show last night, also ‘helped’ — on her Instagram — to unveil Slimane’s first bag release in August — a boxy black leather handbag accented with minimal goldware.
Now the #CELINEBYHEDISLIMANE era has unravelled and the first to appear was a dress — polka dotted, fun and conspicuously young. Within a few minutes of the show, we’ve spotted a pattern — the 50-year-old designer has evidently brought his Saint Laurent days back to life but on another stage and name. A quick search on the internet has proven our theory right, as many viewers were asking the same exact question: “Is this Celine or Saint Laurent?”
Everything is similarly dark and edgy, leaving not much of a colour palette except a few bright sparkly dresses and outerwear here and there. But overall — it’s a handful of LBDs on steroids and leather jackets in all shapes and forms you’d imagine. The collection indeed strikes a resemblance to his signature 80s glam days at Saint Laurent. Glitzy, party-ready looks will be sold on the racks in a high-end Celine store — quite the opposite of Phoebe Philo’s tailored masculine-meets-feminine pieces.
“You don’t enter a fashion house to imitate the work of your predecessor,” he told a French newspaper. And yes, we can definitely see that.

The show kicked off with this bow dress and it’s probably the most structured piece out of all.
Frilly LBDs were spotted on the runway.
A number of oversized shoulder pieces were spotted on the runway as well.
Hedi Slimane also debuted the menswear collection last night.
Cut-out dresses and cropped leather jacket? — pretty cool indeed.
Reds, golds, silvers and a single sparkly green dress were the only bright shades used in this collection.
More leather jackets paired with little LBDs.
This full leather jumpsuit piece would probably be one of our favourites from the collection.
A collaboration piece with Swiss-American artist, Christian Marclay.
Loving some of the men’s pieces? All the suiting worn by men on the catwalk will also be available in women’s sizing.
