KL Fashion Week 2017 is done warming up. The second day of #KLFWRTW2017 continued with an eclectic, utilitarian, and dramatic showcase of collections from over 20 of the country’s most celebrated designers. These include Jiuan Ng, Zaimi Zulkafli, and Ana Abu.

Malaysian brands like 3 by Syomir / Nurita / Justin, and Kanvassed by Shazmin Hashim may have excited guests earlier at Day 2 of KL Fashion Week 2017 — but street fashion brands such as Nabil Volkers, Andy Bandy, and Supercrew truly caught our fancy. Seeing their recognisable, highly graphic, and visual trademarks convinced us they can actually make it big in the fashion industry outside Malaysia.

Thavia by Tengku Chanela Jamidah then took over with its signature #refinedchic style. Inspired by Jamidah’s mother, Thavia’s The Estate collection made statements with its sleeves (think extend caps, mutton, Juliet, and Dolman sleeves), pleated hemlines, and pants accentuated by silver or gold-plated zippers, buttons, and buckles.

Bright splashes of colour eventually filled the night beginning with Ka-Sha, an Indian brand helmed by designer Karishma Shahani Khan. Khan’s collection for #KLFWRTW2017 showcased bandghala coats, ombre skirts, and modern saree dresses in vibrant hues of red, blue, turquoise, and canary yellow — mixing Western and quintessential Indian fashion.

Mimpikita’s Spring Summer 2018 collection meanwhile, strayed from luxury. The well-loved Malaysian fashion brand instead settled to have fun with its playful combination of polka dots, stripes, and geometric prints with voluminous ruffles, big bows, pagoda skirts, and floral embellishments.

But Farah Khan‘s eponymous label owned the entire Day 2 of KL Fashion Week 2017, celebrating a decade of style on the runway. Celebrities like actresses Azure Aishah and Zahida Rafik as well as TV hosts Deborah Henry and Thanuja Ananthan opened her 9 pm show. The internationally recognised couture designer brought the show to a crescendo with her Pop Princess collection that paired puffy tulle skirts with sequinned bomber jackets. Her 20th Century Maestro collections — which turned visual art geniuses like Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, and Juan Gris into couture cocktail dresses and gowns — simply took our breaths away.
