Mulberry is doing right by 2019 with the launch of the new Portobello Tote – it’s made of 100 per cent sustainable leather and of unisex design. It joins the many brands that are working to neutralise their carbon footprint.
It features a soft structure with loop handles resembling a supermarket plastic bag — a silhouette that has been coming back on trend in recent seasons, but also a clever take on an item that is known for being disposable and damaging to the planet. “Our starting point was the ultimate everyday item, the plastic bag — functional, but throwaway,” explained creative director Johnny Coca. “The Portobello keeps the beautiful utility of this silhouette and elevates it into an elegant tote that is practical and, more importantly, made to last.”
Made entirely at the brand’s factories in Somerset, UK, the Portobello Tote is created using heavy grain leather from gold standard tanneries (rated by Leather Working Group), all produced using by-products of food production. The bags are then stitched together using recycled Epic EcoVerde thread, adorned with an embossed Mulberry logo for minimal elegance.
Other than classic colours of black and chestnut, as well as seasonal hues including tangerine orange and nordic blue, the brand has also introduced, for the first time, Mulberry Green (online exclusive) to the sustainable leather range. This emblematic colour is now the brand’s signature shade, which is a symbol of its continuous commitment to eco-friendly and responsible production. Each bag also comes with a shoulder strap, so you can wear it any way you please.

In case you needed more incentive than the sophisticated design, carbon-neutral production and eco-friendly leather, 100% of profits from the sale of the bag will go towards international conversation charity World Land Trust, which works to protect and conserve threatened habitats and endangered wildlife around the world.
