How to incorporate neon into your outfit without overdoing it

Eye-catching, bold and fluorescent neon shades are the way to go to soar to greater heights.

People often hear the word neon and tend to scare themselves away with its intimidating highlighter hues. Did you know that it was made popular in the ’80s and ’90s music scene back when concerts and festivals were thriving in its glory days? We believe that it’s time to leave your safe blacks to rest and focus on adding bright colours into your everyday wardrobe to elevate your mood and style personality. It’s been said that embracing bright colours to your lifestyle does have abilities to bring a feel-good aura, so why not incorporate that vibe this season with your stylish fits?

From the runway

Let’s say if you have neutrals – olive, brown, black and grey – dominating your closet, you can start by experiment your neutral pieces by pairing these neon shades for that extreme wow-factor. If you’re feeling adventurous and want to kick off the season (once MCO is over, of course) with an exceptional wardrobe, then we think this trend is the best base to start with.

Whether you want to experiment with layering, colour blocking, tonal looks or in full monochrome – the opportunities to explore are endless. Our best bet is to start small by matching your neon pieces with your everyday neutrals like how Balmain did it with a power-shoulder moment and an asymmetrical mini skirt – you can always switch it out with pants too. Another tip is to think out of the box by pairing two of the boldest colours of your choice as a powerful combo. We would start with orange and pinks or blue and green.

Another safe route is to match your neon monochrome look, like this MSGM and Roksanda look with neutral accessories. Once you’re comfortable with the idea of the neon trend, you can then switch your neutrals to colour match your shoes, or hunt for the closest shade to style for a tonal touch. If you’re intrigued to try this season’s trend, here are the signature silhouettes to own for an all-day affair; an oversized button-down shirt, basic midi/maxi dresses, oversized blazers and straight-cut pants.

Do keep in mind that the key to great style is to be brave with your choices, own it and learn to accept the process along the way.

Romantic and put-together are how we’d like to describe this Saint Laurent blouse. Perfect for a day-to-night affair, we’d pair this blouse with flared trousers or straight-cut pants to flatter the overall look. Finish off with strappy coloured heels in the same shade, or keep it simple with a black pointed-toe slip-on.

You can never own too many swimsuits when it’s summer all year long in Malaysia. While it’s always safe to opt for black and white as your go-to choice, this off-shoulder swimsuit works great for a weekend getaway, especially with its striking hue. Pair it with a printed sarong skirt or high-waisted denim shorts, and you’ll be good to go.

The Chiquito bag is an iconic piece to own in your collection and there are various ways to style this Jacquemus creation. You can start by colour blocking with a monochrome outfit in pink or red, or toning it down with a pastel beige ruffled dress for the Chiquito to shine.

We like the ’90s vibe with this Bottega Veneta skirt, especially when you can combine it with a matching button-down cardigan or with a simple black graphic tee. Take the rugged route by pairing your favourite sneakers and accessorising with chunky gold jewellery to fit the overall mood.

We’re sensing serious ’70s vibe with this dreamy electric blue pants, so why don’t you boost the pants with a graphic print blouse in neon hues to stand out? We’d start by pairing retro-inspired prints to match, which will go perfectly for a night out in town.
