Leading up to the Royal Wedding, every little detail was subject to public scrutiny — from what flavour the cake would be (it’s lemon-elderflower) to which celebrities were (Serena Williams! The Clooneys!) or were not invited. But none was more obsessively pored over as what Meghan Markle, now Her Royal Highness Duchess of Sussex, would wear on her big day.
Seconds after Markle stepped out of her car, Givenchy and The Kensington Palace confirmed Clare Weight Keller as the designer behind the dress. With a boatneck and a fuller silhouette, the subdued dress was complemented with a large veil and the Order of Splendor tiara, on loan from the Queen and was once worn by Queen Mary. Her jewellery of choice, a pair of diamond earrings from Cartier, was as pared back as the rest of her look.
Although all eyes were on the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, the 600 guests invited to the ceremony had to adhere to the strict dress code of “lounge suits” for the gents and “day dresses” for the ladies, which essentially entailed business suits and a combo of non-evening gowns topped with hats, respectively.
