If clean, minimalist white sneakers enjoyed peak popularity in the past few years, we’re definitely seeing a change in the tide of trends, paving the way for maximalist sneakers. Or to be more specific, chunky dad sneakers.
That’s right, the past few decades of you shunning the mismatched colours and overall bulkiness of chunky dad sneakers are finally back to haunt you in the form of high end fashion brands. In fact, in recent seasons, sneakerheads are increasingly embracing the ugly-chic aesthetic of shoes dating back to the Ozweego sneaker in the Adidas x Raf Simons collaboration.
Of course, it would be made popular when hypekid favourite brand Vetements released a collaboration with Reebok: literal pumped up kicks with that look worn out. Because, you know, dirty shoes are also an apparent trend.
High end luxury brands are also jumping on the chunky dad sneakers bandwagon by coming out with their own versions of ugly-chic shoes. Balenciaga released its Triple S sneakers for its Fall/Winter 2017 collection, a chunky colour-block of blue, grey, and yellow that looks decidedly worn — in a fashionable way.
Gucci, a millennial favourite, has also released chunky dad sneakers that would help the minimalist at heart stay abreast street trends — chunky, yet all-white. Although, it seems like Alessandro Michele has decided to slap on the Gucci logo since after its Cruise 2018 presentation.
Like most vicious fashion cycles, we weren’t too surprised to see something our fathers used to call “trendy” come back in fashion. High fashion is increasingly embracing ugly-chic, from the rise of geek-chic to the ugliest shoes in history getting blinged up on a Christopher Kane runway show. Chunky dad sneakers are as mild as it gets.
So, what do you do? Time to raid your father’s shoe cupboard for a chic pair of worn-out sneakers, then.
