Forget Pantone Colour of the Year swatches, because generational colour trends are where it’s really at. Previously, we had millennial pink taking over the world. We saw the soft pink hue in fashion pieces, architecture, and also museums. Then, a spate of hot pink taking over last year’s fashion weeks made us suspect that perhaps, it was the new shade taking over millennial pink. We were wrong because the next generational colour trend is Gen-Z yellow.
With millennials now being regarded as “old”, it seems appropriate enough that the next generation of tastemakers are Generation-Z. You probably already know most of them: the Hadid sisters, Gigi and Bella; and the Jenner sisters, Kendall and Kylie. Other Gen-Z celebrities leading the trend include Zendaya, Jaden Smith, Tavi Gevinson, and more. If there’s one perfect example to prove how powerful their influence is on the masses, just take a look at Kylie Jenner’s perpetually sold out Lip Kit.
Funnily enough, one of the catalysts for Gen-Z yellow did not come from a Generation Z influencer. It came from Beyonce, specifically in her Lemonade music video where she donned a marigold yellow ruffled dress. Then, high fashion designers started incorporating the bright yellow hue into their Spring/Summer 2018 collections too. Take, for example, Jacquemus’ La Bomba collection, Prabal Gurung’s Spring 2018 collection, and Gucci’s printed yellow dress.
Then, the shade started hitting the streets — street styles, that is. The likes of Rihanna, Gigi Hadid, Selena Gomez, Yara Shahidi, and more were spotted in Gen-Z yellow. Although it is not a notice-me neon shade of yellow, it’s still a bright shade. Described as a cross of marigold and mustard, it can be difficult to pull off the shade. If you’re not prepared to wear a whole outfit of yellow, try introducing it to your wardrobe in small doses. Start with accessories such as bags and shoes, before moving on to one item of clothing, then graduating to a full look of Gen-Z yellow.
