With men’s timepieces dominating the industry, watches can sometimes take a backseat for women when trying to style a look correctly.  Some women mistake the significance the role a timepiece has to play in fashion; lumping it into the same category as their jewellery and matching both for what they may perceive as a complete style. Although this is not totally incorrect, women can use watches in far more bolder ways to drive a fashion sensibility as opposed to merely matching metallics. On the other hand, there are times when timepieces should not be overtly flashy or riddled with bling as that can pull apart an entire look. Stress not, for we have put together a few simple rules for you to follow and in no time you will see how your timepiece can make all the difference to your style.

1
Formal

The rule of thumb for a formal watch is stick to traditional timepieces. Traditional women’s watches are extremely versatile and can be styled to any occasion or look. More importantly, they are understated. Your watch should never distract from your outfit but instead play a supporting role in pulling your look together. If you are wearing an evening dress then the most formal occasion calls for simplicity in the timepiece. A suitable dress watch only needs a thin black or brown leather strap showing only hours, minutes, seconds and maybe the date at most. If you wear a metallic strap the make sure it matches the metallic highlights in your outfit or other accessories. A Cartier Baignoire or a Versace Versus is more than suitable for such occasions.

2
Minimalist

Monochromatic styles mean wearing the same overall tone but of varying shades and textures. The look can be anything but boring when pulled off right but your watch, just as with any other accessory must fall into line. The minimalist look is very classy and elegant, so your watch face should represent that. If you’re wearing all white then wear a white face timepiece with a white strap, if you’re wearing black then sport a dark face with a dark strap. Minimalism calls for very clear lines and patterns, so don’t wear anything that distracts for the cleanliness of the style. Nomos Orion are known for creating luxury minimalist timepieces that pride themselves in the beauty of simplicity.

3
Size matters

As opposed to men’s trends, ladies timepieces are in fact getting smaller. Wearing smaller faces on your wrist certainly heighten a feminine appeal. Many watches, from Baume & Mercier’s Petite Promesse to Dior’s La Mini D De Dior achieve this effortlessly. However, that is not to say you can’t wear a larger face to suit your style. For an added bohemian style, then watches like Bauering give large faces with leather straps a sophisticated edge. Try and avoid clean line, plain designs and intense colours when wearing a large face watch as they can come off overtly masculine.

4
Try men's watches

Read our article on why some men’s watches look great on women. Due to design conventions of the past, women have been wearing classic men’s watches for a more assertive and professional look. For example the Panerai Luminor is aggressively masculine but a brawny face can make quite the statement on a woman’s wrist. Standing at 40mm the Rolex Daytona has been a favourite among celebrities such as Elle McPherson and Madonna, as its subtleness and versatility can be worn to almost any occasion.

5
Casual chic

Stainless steel straps are the most versatile option for everyday use whether it is at the office, hitting the gym or going out shopping. Metallics should also be paired accordingly with your accessories. For example, if you have a gold clasp on your bag then try wear a gold strap. However, metal straps might not be the most comfortable thing to wear and comfort should be at the core of casual watches. It also is a time were you can be bolder with your colours. For this reason, why not try multicoloured straps for a more relaxed style. It adds a hippie which edge to your outfit and you can always interchange them for other suitable options.

6
The fashion statement

When you want to make a fashion statement with your watch, it is best to keep the glitzy and bold colours to only your wrist. Tone down the elements of your outfit and keep eyes cast to your timepiece. Make it the centre of a conversation without your clothes taking too much attention. A Chopard‘s Happy Diamonds watch is the perfect example of a statement timepiece. Sparkling in diamonds and with a bold square face, the timepiece creates an eye-catching and dazzling effect.
