An inside look at Anantara Desaru Coast Resort & Villas, the brand’s first Malaysian property

By now, most will already be familiar with the up-and-coming luxury destination that is Desaru Coast. Previously we stayed at the Hard Rock Hotel Desaru Coast, but what we’re most excited about are the two uber-luxe hotel properties that will mark the brands’ first foray into Malaysia: One&Only and Anantara Desaru Coast. The latter, in fact, is set to open its doors to the public on the 1st of December 2019.

The luxury resort is designed by Singapore architectural firm WOW Architects & Warner Wong Design and interiors by Environment Design Consultants from Malaysia. Taking inspiration from traditional Malay buildings, the resort uses indigenous materials and fabrics that are familiar to us including woven textiles, wicker and rattan elements, as well as silhouettes reminiscent of Malay crafts. This is particularly evident in the pool villas — it’s an amalgamation of form and function, as the traditional design plays well with the country’s tropical weather. Think floor-to-ceiling windows, slanted wooden panels, louvres and vents under the roof, as well as wide-open doors to allow natural airflow.

There are 123 rooms in Anantara Desaru Coast, comprising 90 deluxe guest rooms with garden, lagoon, and ocean views; 13 standalone one- and two-bedroom pool villas; and 20 three- and four-bedroom residences that are perfect for families or larger groups of people. The residences come with its own infinity pool, full kitchen, chef, and butler service.

As for the dining options within the resort, there is Sea.Fire.Salt, a specialty grill and seafood restaurant with alfresco courtyard and beachside dining, an all-day dining outlet offering local, Asian, and international fare. For sunset cocktails, Anantara has you covered with an observatory bar overlooking the resort and ocean, as well as an infinity beach pool bar. Finally, the star restaurant on the property has to be Dining By Design, the resort’s signature private dining experience in exotic locales — perfect for a romantic night out.

Other amenities in Anantara Desaru Coast include two swimming pools, a kids club, and the signature Anantara Spa and fitness centre. Heading to the resort is all part of a relaxation package, and you should definitely indulge while you’re there. It’s also currently the only property on the Desaru Coast development to be connected to a stretch of beach – that alone should already signal the exclusivity of the resort.
