Historically speaking, travel used to be a luxury. But thanks to rising income levels and lowering of costs in air transportation, we’re seeing an uninterrupted tourism boom since 2014. Malaysia’s airports alone for instance just got 29-percent busier compared to last year.

While that may spark fears that the industry can’t catch up, that’s hardly the case. The opening of Sheraton Petaling Jaya in a financial hub earlier this week, for one, is a clear proof that the tourism industry in Malaysia is set to get that much more vibrant.

And it definitely won’t be the last. Following the grand opening of Hotel Sofitel Kuala Lumpur in Damansara City in August, there’s still a long string of openings for new hotels to anticipate this year like that of The Ritz-Carlton Langkawi in November and the re-launching of JW Marriott Kuala Lumpur in December (after undergoing months-long renovation.)

Expect this to spill over in 2018. In fact, we’re looking forward to seeing a whole batch of new hotels to welcome modern travellers in Kuala Lumpur all the way until 2022. So, take note of these 8 luxury accommodations that could well be your next staycation destination in the next five years.

1
Four Seasons Hotel & Resort Kuala Lumpur

A couple of months more and we will be wanting to check in at the new Four Seasons Hotel & Resort Kuala Lumpur set to open in early 2018. Aside from the hotel, the 65-storey building will also house a 242-unit residence, a 27-key serviced apartment, and a luxury retail podium that will be called as the Four Seasons Place Kuala Lumpur.

2
W Hotel Kuala Lumpur

Widely known for its urban cool vibe, the W Kuala Lumpur Hotel promises an accommodation that’s marked with a luxurious combination of art, design, music and fashion. Along with its signature WET pool, the 150-room hotel will occupy 10 floors of a building that has been under construction on the former Bok House site along Jalan Ampang. The opening of this popular Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide hotel brand has been pushed to June next year.

CitizenM

Starting next year, modern travellers will have another option of staying at an entry-level luxury hotel in Kuala Lumpur next year. The Kuala Lumpur hotel will have 198 rooms and will be located in Bukit Bintang. Following the opening of the same hotel brand in Shanghai that’s set to be launched in the first quarter of 2018, its scheduled operation along Bukit Bintang in the second quarter of next year signals the beginning of Artyzen Hospitality Group’s expansion in Singapore, Jakarta, Bangkok, and Ho Chi Minh.

6
So Sofitel

AccorHotels won’t be stopping with the opening of Sofitel Hotel in Damansara City two months ago. The French multinational hotel group will be opening So Sofitel Kuala Lumpur Hotel, which will ignite a series of hotel openings surrounding Petronas Twin Towers starting 2020. Linked to a 590-key serviced residence, it will be part of a large-scale mixed-use development that includes an office tower and a retail mall.

7
Crowne Plaza

A 338-room hotel will soon tower over embassies, trendy restaurants and bars along the vibrant Jalan Yap Kwan Sent in 2021 — good news for business men and women who often travel to Kuala Lumpur. A stone’s throw away from the Petronas Twin Towers, guests will be near major commercial areas in the city’s central business district while enjoying a fully-equipped business centre and seven versatile meeting spaces which can be transformed to suit a range of functions and events.

8
Radisson Red

Come 2022, a 27-storey upscale hotel will be erected at the edge of the Golden Triangle in KL. Located 800 meters from the iconic Petronas Twin Towers, the Carlson Rezidor property is expected to change the hospitality game in the city centre with a lifestyle-focused service that not only caters to the DIY attitude of millennial travellers, but relate to their interests in art, music, and fashion as well.
