The American hotel giant brings its top-of-the-line luxury brand (geared toward ‘residential-style luxury’) to the City of Sails. The sprawling waterfront property promises four F&B venues, panoramic views over Auckland’s iconic Waitematā Harbour, and interiors inspired by the traditional Maori household.

New Zealand’s early and relatively consistent successes in managing CoViD-19 mean that several of the country’s domestic industries have been able to function over these last few months, up to a point, as normal. In the hotel space, Park Hyatt has even managed to affix an opening date for its first ever property in New Zealand — scheduled to open to the public on 15 September. Colour us impressed.

Guestrooms range in size from 47-245 sq.m., and are decorated with a mixture of traditional Maori motifs and modern comforts.

Boasting panoramic views of Waitematā Harbour, the seven-storey bolthole is poised to become Auckland’s most stylish luxury hotel yet, and to set a new standard in the New Zealand hospitality industry. The property takes the quintessential Park Hyatt experience — centring on personalised service in a relaxing residential setting — and grounds that in New Zealand’s rich Maori heritage.

Interiors at Park Hyatt Auckland adhere to the concept of the wharenui — a low-slung, open-plan dwelling that reflects the community spirit of Maori culture. The hotel’s 195 guestrooms have been envisioned by London-based Conran & Partners (the same firm behind Hong Kong’s Hotel Icon), all featuring heritage details like custom-made tukutuku screens, traditional Maori artwork and textiles made from local wool.

Unusually for Auckland, all rooms are designed with a separate shower and deep-soaking area — and in line with Park Hyatt’s global commitment to sustainable practices, are stocked with plant-based toiletries from Le Labo.

The hotel’s F&B offering is split between four restaurants and bars. At Onemata (pictured), Executive Chef Brent Martin prepares a seasonal menu, making concerted efforts to showcase the best local Kiwi produce.

Moving beyond the impressive building specs, Park Hyatt Auckland will launch this spring with a lineup of four restaurants and bars that take advantage of the hotel’s stellar, waterfront locale. Onemata, the hotel’s ‘hero’ venue, flies the flag for seasonal, contemporary fare — drawing on artisanal producers from up and down the country’s length. Other venues include an all-day dining venue; a snacking-focused ‘grab and go’; and an in-house cocktail bar with “an extensive list of fortified spirits.”
