Team pick: Our favourite fragrances of 2016

Fragrances are a touchy subject. Everyone’s got their own favourites and hate-its, certain notes they prefer, and others they borderline retch to. A good fragrance is like discovering an unquestionably obedient pet from the perfume jungle — there’s no fuss, and a spritz always invites a sense of comfort. This often tempts people into sticking with the same scent for eons, with little need for change in sight.

If you’re looking to finally break out of your comfort zone, your favourite scent just got discontinued (god forbid), or you’re gunning for a unique gift for someone special, we’ve compiled a handful of our favourite fragrances of 2016 for your consideration.

Louis Vuitton Apogée Les Parfums

The new Louis Vuitton fragrance line is both an exercise in olfactory minimalism and design. Apogée is the best one — a lily of the valley scent that intensifies beautifully throughout the day without leaving you smelling like a wilting flower.

Available at Louis Vuitton boutiques.

Penhaligon's Vaara

Penhaligon’s Vaara is the perfect union between the scents of Morocco and Jodhpur. Rosewater, freesia and honey lend a slight sweetness to the body of the scent, undercut by a heady dose of spice from carrot seeds, corriander seed and saffron. This perfume is a must-have for anyone tired of the saccharine or offensively musky scents saturating the designer fragrance market.

Available at Penhaligon’s boutiques.

Bvlgari Goldea

This is the heaviest scent on the list. Bvlgari Goldea is geared towards more mature women, or for those who enjoy musky fragrances that err on the floral  side. It’s a warm, strong scent, spliced with notes of greenery and amber that are incredibly lasting.

Available at Bvlgari boutiques and major departmental stores.

Gucci Bamboo Eau de Toilette

Romantic. Sweet. Fresh. Perky. Floral prints. If any of the aforementioned synonyms corroborates with your personal aesthetic, grab Gucci Bamboo’s Eau de Toilette. It’s a delicate scent, with mandarin essence, ylang ylang and Casablanca lily. You’ll smell just like a garden at springtime.

Available at Gucci boutiques and major departmental stores.

Jo Malone Cologne Intense in "Velvet Rose & Oud"

This Jo Malone scent is like a romantic date in a bottle — sweet praline, spicy oud wood, notes of damask rose and spicy cloves come together to create a peppery rose perfume that’ll leave your partner inspired. It’s also the perfect present for anyone special you might want to seduce.

Available at Jo Malone boutiques.
