It may already be March, but unless you’ve been fortunate (or prudent enough) to take a break from the endless calorie consumption and late nights, jumping right back into the grind is probably the last thing you need. So if you find yourself slathering on a slick of skin calming primers before practically spray painting on foundation to cover enlarged pores, red patches and spots, perhaps is time to take a stroll down to The Wellness Clinic, for their selection of skin saving treatments.
Given the hectic schedules we have at editorial, a quick glance at my sad, sallow skin condition had Dr Ram Nath, medical director of the clinic, recommend the Pico Clear Treatment, which is a three-step, 45-minute rejuvenating process.
What it is
Two lasers and a premium face mask make up the Pico Clear Treatment. The first laser, called the Cutera Enlighten picosecond laser, is not only gentle, but also removes pigments and tattoos in half the time as compared to other conventional lasers. The second one, the Norseld Dual Yellow laser, is a magical thing that stimulates collagen production, simmers down the redness in your skin as well as lighten dark eye circles. Then, you take a short nap with a Swiss Alginate face mask on.
The usual prep for lasers involves some time put aside for a numbing cream to work (as lasers can get rather prickly). However, to my surprise, after cleansing off the makeup on my face, Dr Nath got straight to work. Plus 10 points for convenience. At some point, he mentioned that there have been lasers on the market that don’t react well to Asian skin, leaving them with dark patches (from post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation) during the healing process. Sounds like too much of a risk for us.
In the wide world of aesthetic lasers, the Enlighten is a new one introduced to The Wellness Clinic last year, and is a world first for featuring dual wavelengths and two pulse durations for application – picosecond (one trillionth of a second), and nanosecond, which is the duration that most lasers offer. Having a shorter pulse means that breakdown of pigments become more effective, with half the energy required, hence shortening treatment time.
We settled into a cool, comfortable room and had the nurse and Dr Nath talk us through the entire process. Discomfort is at its absolute minimal with both lasers. You feel very light pin pricks with the Enlighten laser, and virtually nothing with Dual Yellow laser. There was mild swelling after the former, but the peel-off mask that is applied after gives your skin some time to calm down.
Having unpredictable, temperamental skin has always been a pain in the ass when it comes to products and makeup. Too rich, and it reacts; too light, and nothing much happens. Towards the evening, I could already see my skin plumping up, but results were best the following morning. It seemed like Christmas, New Year and the lunar new year season left no aftermath on my face. All the redness and fatigue had taken off, giving skin good enough to walk out of the house without concealer. According to Dr Nath, results will last from anywhere from a few weeks to six months if you’re careful, but cautioned that regular maintenance is required.
