6 post-party spa treatments you should indulge in

If you’re still feeling sluggish even though we’re two weeks past the year-end festivities, you’re not alone. All those booze-addled late nights out — coupled with binge-eating turkey and mince pies — can’t be very good for your skin, body and liver.

But forget painful weeks of juice detox and sweating it out at the gym. Here at Lifestyle Asia, we believe in taking care of our bodies like the five-starred mountain-top temples they are. So we’ve kindly taken it upon ourselves to check out five of the most luxurious spa treatments in Singapore. From the very homely Fullerton Spa to the über futuristic AWAY spa at Sentosa, these options will have you back on track in no time at all.

The Westin Singapore: Lavender Spa Journey at Heavenly Spa

Westin Spa

Decked out in calming wood and earth tones, this nature-inspired spa at The Westin Singapore is an ideal spot to relax and recharge — especially when you’re worn out from the many parties that made up the bulk of your festive holidays. We recommend its Lavender Spa Journey, a 90-minute treatment targeted at relieving stress, tension, insomnia and jet lag. The session begins with a 30-minute lavender body scrub, where a fragrant blend of natural sea salt, sweet almond oil and lavender essential oil is slathered all over one’s body to gently slough off dead skin cells.

After washing off the beads in the shower, one is pampered with a rejuvenating 60-minute massage, where the therapist rubs more lavender oil, while deftly kneading out all those stubborn knots. All the products used are imported from Australia. When the whole treatment is over, unwind in the spa’s lounge, which is equipped with nutritious snacks such as walnuts and apricots, and — more importantly — a great view of Chinatown and the city.

Price: S$250++ per person, S$450++ per couple for 90 minutes

Grand Hyatt Singapore: Revive treatment at Damai Spa

Image: Grand Hyatt Singapore

Tucked in the back of the bustling Grand Hyatt Singapore, Damai Spa felt like a different world altogether. I was served a glass of ice-cold coconut juice and a cold towel upon arrival. The therapist asked if any part of my body needed special attention, and I told her my shoulders have been aching for a while now. Two different types of oils which were recommended for muscle aches were offered to me after she understood my needs. She then put both oils on my hands, one of each, and asked me which I preferred. In her words, “the one you like is the one your body chooses, and it will be the one we will use today”.

Damai ESPA Body Massage

The body scrub and wrap during the ESPA Detox Wrap was so refreshing and felt so good. A quick rinse-off and some ginger tea later, the therapist proceeded to gently massage my entire body with warm stones that loosened the knots in my shoulders. She even gave me a few tips and “home remedies” on how to release tight muscles — a thoughtful touch after the two-hour session.

W Singapore: AWAY Massage at AWAY Spa

Massages typically leave you feeling like a satisfied, groggy pillow, but AWAY Spa’s eponymous massage does the reverse without compromising on fulfilment. In a dark room lit with soothing blue light, you’ll be treated to a mixture of stretches by the therapist, as well as Swedish massage techniques to detox your muscles for 90 blissful minutes.

Stretching doesn’t sound particularly relaxing, but the AWAY massage debunks that all by contorting your body into specific positions designed to relieve tense muscles — ideal for fitness junkies who feel sore after an intense workout, or if you’re just tackling a particularly brutal hangover. Leave the room feeling thoroughly renewed, and partake in the spa facilities like the temperature-controlled Vitality Pool or saunas for added pampering.

Price: S$250++ for 90 minutes

We indulged in the latter – a therapeutic and rejuvenating massage using warm lapis stones that is said to have healing properties and aid relaxation because of its deep, celestial blue hue. The therapist used pressure that ranged from moderate to deep, which intensely soothed tired, aching muscles. I felt divinely revitalised and felt my worries drift away after the 90-minute session.

As part of its soft opening promotion, you can book any 90-minute massage from now till 26 January 2017 to enjoy a complimentary 15-minute La Mer Express Eye and Lip treatment.

The Fullerton Hotel: Asian Heritage Signature by The Fullerton Spa

The Fullerton Spa

The Asian Heritage Signature is The Fullerton Spa’s signature treatment for a good reason: it is one of the best massages I’ve ever had in my life. Based on the concept of life energy which flows through “meridians” in the body, the pampering experience started off with a detoxifying ginger tea and foot soak. The massage oil — an invigorating blend of warmed rosemary, ginger, lavender and black pepper oils by U.K. label Aromatherapy Associates — was kept warm, so its soothing scent permeated the entire room and set mood for the rest of the treatment.

My therapist started with a scalp massage which quite nearly put me to sleep, followed by an intensive full body massage which combined stretching, Chi balance and Chinese pressure points. I could already feel my blood circulating in my body again, and the tension at my neck and shoulders were miraculously gone by the end of it.

St Regis Singapore:  Royal Thai massage at Remede Spa

Image: Remede Spa, The St Regis Singapore

Let’s be honest here — a Thai massage isn’t exactly relaxing, but our brief was to explore “rejuvenating” treatments after a decedent post-holiday period. Usually, Thai massages bring to mind mild acrobatics on a mat, aided by tiny, but unbelievably strong Thai masseuses. The thought can be stressful to some, and definitely not something you’d want to venture while nursing a hangover. However, this 90-minute session at Remede Spa has completely changed my opinion on Thai massages.

No oil is used during this treatment, and guests are given a loose outfit to wear for the duration of the treatment. It works like acupuncture without the scary stigma of needles, which releases “blockages” along major energy meridians in the body. So while some stretching was required, the massage mostly consisted of slow, deliberate pressing and kneading. Surprisingly, I left more alert and refreshed, making this perfect for frequent travellers prone to jet lag.

We’d encourage you to arrive 20 minutes earlier to enjoy the women’s only wet lounge with steam room, Finnish sauna and heated pool, it’s well worth the time.

Price: S$270++ for 90 minutes.
