It’s a good week to be a Singaporean. The 1987 classic song — We Are Singapore — just got an upgrade by way of local singer Charlie Lim. It will also serve as this year’s theme song for the National Day Parade.
The refreshed version has all the hallmarks of a millennial’s creation. Lim recorded a new prelude in his bedroom, the opening melodies were replaced with synth beats, and the pledge was rapped. This contemporary take has garnered praise since its release early this week, and we’re loving it, too.
Another pride of our nation is our red passport. For this year’s Henley Passport Index, the Singaporean passport tied with Germany’s for the second most powerful in the world. Yes, our passport grants us visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 188 countries around the world. Taking the top spot is Japan, one of our favourite destinations that gives its citizens access to 189 countries.
