The past week has been full of pleasant surprises. Just a couple of days ago, we heard the announcement about the upcoming new Nokia 8, an Android-powered smartphone produced by Finnish company HMD Global. The sleek new phone comes with an array of impressive features such as Dual-Sight mode (which allows users to utilise both the front and rear cameras simultaneously), and the ability to live-stream videos directly to Facebook and Youtube. We’re already thinking of getting our hands on one when it’s available globally in September, partly out of curiosity and sentimental reasons — after all, Nokia’s phones were what most of us grew up with, in the pre-smartphone era.
Closer to home, another highlight was our national team’s stellar performance at the SEA Games, which officially launches tomorrow but started on 14 August for selected events. Singapore has bagged two golds so far in the synchronised swimming category. With promising results in other sports such as football and cricket so far, we’re keeping our hopes up for more good news.
There’s much to look forward to this weekend as well. Today marks the start of the Singapore Night Festival, an annual showcase of light installations, music performances, and even magic shows. It ends 26 August. There’s also the ongoing Beerfest Asia 2017, which features over 500 types of beer — so you can be assured of an indulgent experience. Still can’t think of what else to do? This week’s The Cheat Sheet will help you out. You can visit some of the best dessert spots around the island, consider a quick getaway to the idyllic Gold Coast with our list of secret beaches, and — in celebration of Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel’s birthday tomorrow — read all about the fashion legend’s legacy.
If you have a sweet tooth and shudder at the mere thought of eating clean, here’s a guide to 5 of Singapore’s best dessert cafés.
