It may seem like the culinary world is just revolving around the upcoming World’s 50 Best Restaurants now. But there are other delicious developments — such as new restaurant openings — going on elsewhere. This week, we welcome the king of souffle pancakes and wait in anticipation for the arrival of a new cult burger joint in Singapore.

Singaporeans clearly can’t get enough of cult burger joints. The popular US-based Five Guys franchise is set to open end of 2019, thanks to the efforts of lifestyle company Zouk Group. The outlet will be opened in a ‘central’ location, offering its famous customisable burgers along with craft beers. Can’t wait? Settle cravings at the newly-opened Shake Shack, Burger & Lobster or at these other places.
Cult pancake house Gram is opening at VivoCity
Lately, local cafes have been jumping onto the souffle pancake bandwagon. Now, this big name from Japan is coming to Singapore to show how it’s done. Gram Cafe’s signature Premium Pancakes is a gravity-defying tower of fluffy pancakes, served with house-made butter, whipped cream and maple syrup. The cafe will only do 90 servings every day, so be prepared to queue early. There are also classic pancakes on the menu with sweet and savoury toppings to explore.
Jaan has a new name
It has been four years since Kirk Westaway took over Jaan and about a year since he boldly introduced modern British cuisine. After bagging a few achievements — moving up on the Asia’s 50 Best list and retaining a Michelin star — the restaurant has finally gone on to acknowledge the 34-year-old’s efforts. Jaan is now renamed Jaan by Kirk Westaway, setting in stone the new directions he has been putting in place so far. Find out more about his latest menu in our review here.

Leading up to its official award ceremony, the World’s 50 Best Restaurants is naming the winners of its subsidiary prizes. Just yesterday, the international panel crowned Jessica Prealpato of Alain Duccase au Plaza Athenee the best pastry chef of the year — the first woman ever to win the title. Prealpato is an advocate for ‘guilt-free’ desserts, forgoing sugar for natural flavours in quality ingredients for her creations.
Beyond Meat has a new ‘meatier’ patty
Impossible Foods has been dominating headlines since launching version 2.0 of its plant-based ‘meat’ patty. Now, its rival Beyond Meat has also come up with a better version of its product as well. The new Beyond Meat patty has a combination of coconut oil and cocoa for better ‘marbling’ and a more ‘complete’ protein profile from beans and grain. Look out for it in supermarkets soon.
