How many of you have dreamed about bringing a Japanese bento box to school?

The compact treasure chests are often filled with delicately arranged rice balls, decked out in a rainbow hue of assorted vegetables and juicy meat slices that’s sure to elicit a chorus of oohs and ahhs when opened, much more so than a ham and cheese sandwich in a plastic ziplock bag.

Even as we move away from the warm embrace of institutional learning, one fact remains the same: we still look forward to the beautiful surprise that awaits us when we uncover the lids to these nifty bento boxes, this time filled to the brim with indulgent chunks of wagyu, uni and more.

Here, read on for a list of our favourite Japanese bento boxes to dig into.

Beef lovers know where to get the best cuts from. Yes, we’re talking about The Gyu Bar. Following the success of their bento boxes last year, these Signature Wagyu Dons have become a staple for anyone looking to dig into a decadent fuss-free meal. The Wagyu Uni Chirashi Don, for instance, sees a euphonious mix of aburi wagyu, silky Hokkaido uni, ikura, diced takuan, tamagoyaki, and cucumber. The Yakiniku Wagyu Foie Gras Don, on the other hand, houses a harmonious blend of yakiniku wagyu and foie gras to create a mouthwatering, luscious box you won’t forget.

The Gyu Bar offers takeaway via self-collection and islandwide delivery, available daily from 11am to 9pm. Orders may be placed via phone at +65 9150 3164, or online. Let’s face it, it’s hard for anyone who loves Japanese food to go vegan. That is, until recently. Yakiniku Like has paired up with Next Meats to craft a bento box that’s made with 100 percent vegan yakiniku, served with salad and Sanchu lettuce on a bed of rice. Deliciously torched to perfection, this is truly what the future of veganism looks like.
