After eight months of anonymous inspections, the numbers for the inaugural Michelin Guide Bangkok are in. There are now 14 one-michelin-starred and 3 two-Michelin-starred restaurants in the Thai capital. There are no three-starred restaurants.
Gaggan, Le Normandie and Mezzaluna each received two stars while well-loved names like Restaurant Suhring, Ginza Sushi Ichi and Sra Bua as well as Thai street food vendor Raan Jay Fai also received a Michelin star. See below for the complete list.
In total, 98 restaurants and eateries made it to the 2018 Michelin Guide Bangkok. The results were released in the afternoon at a press conference held at Grand Hyatt Erawan Bangkok attended by some 300 members of the media.
Aside from the stars, 35 casual eateries and street food stalls were conferred Bib Gourmand status — a category created for quality establishments that serve up affordable fare. For Bangkok, that cap was placed at THB 1000.
As with every debut, the launch was not without controversy, chief among which was whether Michelin inspectors (who are presumably foreigners) can judge Thai cuisine.
“Don’t judge Bangkok with French standards,” said Gaggan to the South China Morning Post months before he received his stars. “Please. We are not Le Gaggan. We are not French. We are Asians.”
Still, the red guide brings immense clout to a city’s dining scene. For one, it tests Bangkok’s restaurants on the same barometer as Paris, New York and Tokyo. It also tends to bring gourmands flocking to the city, even though the territory has long had its top establishments in other vaunted lists like the Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants.
One comparable case was when it launched in Singapore in 2016 with the Singapore Tourism Board citing it as one of the factors that raised the republic’s attractiveness. The number of visitor arrivals rose by 7.7 per cent while tourism receipts grew by 13.9 per cent for Singapore in 2016.
Bangkok is the most recent city in Asia to have been covered by the Michelin guide in recent years. Since 2016, the French tyre company has released guides in Singapore, Seoul and Shanghai with a Taipei guide slated to be released next year.
