Tonight, the Asia’s 50 Best Bars 2020 results were announced over a digital broadcast. Though a far cry from the alcohol-fuelled dynamism of its physical award ceremonies, the announcements nonetheless brought a cause for celebration to an industry hit extremely hard by COVID-19.

The Asia’s 50 Best Bars 2020 awards, which went live on the committee’s social channels from 7pm, was watched by a legion of industry insiders and enthusiasts. In a heartening gesture, members of the bar industry and the 50 Best clan across the globe shared messages of solidarity to kickstart the announcements.

“The community is too tight to allow a virus to come between us, and that’s why we decided to go ahead with the ceremony,” said Mark Sansom, Content Editor for The World’s 50 Best Bars. “The hard work put in by the bars over the last year should be awarded.”

Singapore achieves a massive win, with Jigger & Pony taking the top spot and becoming Asia’s Best Bar for 2020, rising from ninth place last year. Based out of Amara Hotel, Jigger & Pony’s riff on the classics has defined Singapore’s thriving cocktail industry, and will clearly do so for years to come. It also usurps The Old Man Hong Kong, last year’s champion and the current first runner-up.

Singapore took home 11 placements on the list overall, a count that is the same as last year’s. Operation Dagger, The Other Room and Employees Only, which placed at 22, 46 and 41 respectively on the previous edition are no longer on the list.

The Old Man Singapore is a new entrant, coming in at 22 for its debut. The Singapore outpost of the Ernest Hemingway-inspired bar is its sophomore establishment, the original being based in Hong Kong’s Sheung Wan.

MO Bar at the Mandarin Oriental is another new addition to the line-up, coming in at 46. The first-time entrant is a hotel bar with a menu fixated on the flavours and aromas of the region, served alongside stellar views of the Marina Bay.

To round it off, comeback kid Nutmeg & Close has made its return at 32.

Outside of the list, local supper club No Sleep Club bagged the Campari One To Watch award, which spotlights rising stars in the industry.

While the Asia’s 50 Best Bars 2020 ceremony does stand as a beacon of optimism for the industry, it still needs all the help it can get as we ride through the COVID-19 wave as one.
