The trendy neighbourhood is also home to some of Singapore’s top-notch restaurants and bars, making it an easy destination for a date, an after-work hangout, or a special occasion. Crackerjack’s an all-day destination that showcases the ingenuity of award-winning bartenders Peter Chua and Zachary de Git. Expect drinks like a Riesling slushie, a mezcal negroni, and highballs available all day long to indulge in, and try your hand at its shuffleboard while you’re at it. The place also serves quality, American diner-inspired dishes with a healthy spin like quinoa fried chicken, so you’ll feel less guilt for downing the liquid calories.

Junior is Crackerjack’s new sibling – a conceptual pocket bar situated just behind the main establishment. It’s definitely hidden from view, but, as the bartenders take great care to emphasise, is not a speakeasy. The menu changes every six months, but right now, it’s all about agave-based spirits. Think quality mezcal, tequila, and raicilla-based cocktails and flights for days. The bar only seats 10, with barely any standing room, so visit early.

Jekyll & Hyde’s a veteran in the local bar scene, having been here right at the start of the bespoke cocktail boom. The menu itself follows the concept of nice and naughty (what do you expect with a name like that?), but to really revel in all it has to offer, order a custom cocktail. You won’t regret it.

Sake lovers, head down to Bam! to enjoy an extensive selection of the rice wine. It’s got over 100 bottles to offer, with a healthy portion secured from lesser-known breweries to satisfy enthusiasts. Order some Euro-fusion bites to go with your bottle, or have some sake cocktails if you don’t fancy the liquor neat.

It’s not a bar guide to Tanjong Pagar without a mention of Tippling Club. The award-winning bar’s a fixture on many renowned rankings, including the recent Asia’s 50 Best. Go there and enjoy cocktails like you’ve never had them, engineered by the genius of Joe Schofield. The place has even got negronis aged with ultrasound technology there. ‘Nuff said.

If you can’t shake the need for some soju, go to Hansul. It’s got over 60 different makgeollis, sojus, cheongjus, beers and cocktails for you to enjoy, brought in from nearly every alcohol-producing region in Korea. Also, the establishment’s got mini hwaro grills to barbecue some skewers for munching as you enjoy your drinks.

A dedicated bourbon bar is hard to come by in Singapore, but Bourbon Street’s one of them. The place is packed to the brim with America’s favourite spirit, with over 30 labels to order, and cocktails to choose from too. Head down and get yourself an Old Fashioned, or be adventurous by branching out into oat whiskies, moonshines and ryes.

It’s not easy to find good cava in Singapore, but Bar-celona is where you’d want to visit if you have a hankering for the Catalonian sparkling wine. It sells five different varietals of cava, sparkling sangrias and cava cocktails to pair with Spanish tapas and oysters. Ditch the plans for champagne the next time you’re in Duxton.

Café Gavroche is a quaint French bistro-bar with a wine and spirits selection that any seasoned drinker will find agreeable. If you want flower liqueurs, chartreuses, or eaux-de-vies by the glass, then make your reservations here. It’s got a menu of hearty French bites to accompany your booze, including 14 different tartines made with bread baked in-house.
