T.S Eliot once famously wrote, “April is the cruelest month”, and we can’t help but agree. Think about it. You kickstart the month with April Fool’s, and then segue into what is typically the hottest period of the year. It’s close to being halfway through 2017, but barely even there.
Gloomy potential aside, it’s not all bad. With the recent passing of Singapore Cocktail Festival, the drinks scene seems to be particularly energised. New places to drink have popped up, boasting concepts beyond just having the bottom line of a good cocktail menu. If you’re looking for some places to explore during the weekends (especially the coming Easter!), here are the most promising spots to drink at in April so far.
Established by Mediacorp actor Shane Pow and Sin Lee Foods, MOJO is a Jekyll and Hyde kind of gastrobar. By day, the place serves high-protein, low-carb lunchboxes and fresh juices that cater to the self-conscious CBD crowd. By night, it becomes a Japanese izakaya, serving yakitori, sake, Nippon beers and refreshing house cocktails. The idea behind MOJO may not be the most imaginative, but props to them for trying to cater to the work hard, play hard clientele — happy hour begins at 12pm on weekdays.

Independent cinema, The Projector, has added a second bar to its Golden Mile location. Accented by soft, red lights, Intermission Bar looks straight out of an indie film. The booze menu is not the most unique, but its does amp up the quirk with its “dessert loaves”, which are essentially cakes in flavours such as ondeh ondeh and banana walnut. Pair these with your drink, instead of the usual bar bites.

Flying Monkey is the perfect stop for anyone that craves new experiences. A vibrant interior mirrors the richness of India without appearing too gaudy, and the innovative take on Indian flavours throughout its food and drinks menu makes the place a hip force to be reckoned with. Enjoy freshly made saffron Jalebis with the bar’s house signature, The Flying Monkey, a whisky-based cocktail with aged and smoked ginger.

In celebration of St. George’s Day, Oxwell & Co.’s four stories will be transformed into a funhouse for food and drink lovers. From 1pm to 4pm on 22 April, guests will be treated to a traditionally British Sunday roast, with dishes such as Spatchcock chicken and Yorkshire pudding. More importantly though, this celebration is the gateway to four hours of free flow drinking. Whatever floor you’re on, you get to enjoy as many cocktails, beers and ciders as you desire. Here’s another hidden bar for the books. Walk past the graffiti wall next to Loloku, and you’ll be able to enter DON HO from the back of The Working Capitol. Its tropical cocktail menu plays heavily on fresh, citrus flavours, pairing excellently with its range of mod-Australian food. The best part? All the food comes in small plate portions ideal for sharing, hence leaving space in your stomach for more drinks.
