The Macallan is known for many things, but a particular characteristic that stands out with the distillery is how often it attempts to break the boundaries that constitute a whisky. Many distilleries brand their expressions with age statements, marketing them with a spotlight on maturation, or what’s unique about the distillation process, but The Macallan does not limit itself to those brackets. Its latest release, The Macallan Concept No. 1, is a testament to its rebellious spirit.

The Speyside distillery’s new release is a tribute to art and the sensations that whisky inspires in a drinker. The Macallan has a longstanding collaboration with art, specifically photography with its Masters of Photography series. Taking a fresh turn, the Concept No. 1 ventures into the different medium of surreal visual art, as seen in its whimsical packaging that redesigns the house’s Six Pillars that define its approach to craft. It’s not just all repackaging. The Concept No. 1 also explores The Macallan’s inventive spirit by being the first double-matured whisky released by the distillery. First matured in sherry casks, the liquid is then transferred to sit in ex-bourbon casks to intensify its persona, resulting in a golden single malt that is sweet, spicy and imbued with the characteristics of the oak barrels that lingers after you swallow.

“The Macallan Concept No. 1 is whisky reimagined, offering a compelling new sensory experience that rewards with every sip. The innovative process developed to produce this remarkable single malt pays tribute to the visionaries of the surreal art world and reflects our continuous search for excellence,” comments Master Distiller Nick Savage.

A closer look at the intriguing label.

The Concept No. 1 may be a new step forward for The Macallan in terms of how it makes its whisky, but the resulting dram you enjoy from the teal-labelled bottle is nonetheless explicitly a whisky from the renowned name. Also, given the fact that it is explicitly numbered as the first, this bottling could tease to a future range of The Macallan Concept expressions that further deepen this curious connection between whisky and art.

The Macallan Concept No. 1 is available exclusively in Singapore at DFS Duty Free outlets in Changi Airport. Recommended retail price is currently set at S$170.
