5 wine bars in Singapore to take your mum for Mother’s Day

Popular culture has a penchant for making motherhood go hand-in-hand with wines. Being a mother is arguably the most stressful full-time responsibility, and they’ve got every right to have the occasional glass of wine to take the edge off. Social media has hopped on wine mom culture since 2011, and responded with Facebook pages like “Moms Who Need Wine” and “OMG I so need a glass of wine or I’m gonna sell my kids”. If it’s a meme, it means it’s real.

Mother’s Day is around the corner, and if you’ve got a wine mum of your own, wine bars are a great place to celebrate the occasion. Even if she’s not particularly into the vino, it’s nice to help mum hang loose once in awhile. We’ve put together a list of wine bars that your mum will love, spanning hip and chill bistros to upscale wine specialists for a proper tasting.

13% Gastro Wine Bar

Run by the founder of E-Wine Asia, Bruno Vaillant and award-winning restaurateur, Geoffrey Weckx, 13% Gastro Wine Bar is a plush, comfortable haunt located along artsy Aliwal Street. Specialising in mainly Old World Wines, and Euro-fusion bites to go with your bottle of choice. If mum’s looking for an evening of relaxed conversation and stellar wine, take her here.

Praelum Wine Bistro

The 350-wines strong menu might seem daunting, but Praelum is anything but. The relaxed bistro offers tasting pours you can sample, half-portions, and even quick in-house courses on wine by its resident sommelier. It’s also got champagnes, rosés, dessert wines and such from both New and Old World wineries. Mum will truly be spoilt for choice.

La Terre

If your mum’s a serious wine snob, take her to La Terre. Walk in, and you’re greeted by a decor that exudes Japanese minimalism to the extreme. Granted, since Daisuke Kawai is the sommelier at the reigns. The drinks menu comes to you like a book, packed with over a thousand variants of wines and whiskies, ranging anywhere from S$18 a glass to S$35,000 a bottle. This includes some more exquisite labels like Rothschild, Latour and Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. Kawai is more than willing to share his recommendations, and these are solid ones, given his extensive pedigree. Get your suit and credit card ready.

Lovers of French cuisine, as well as wines from Bordeaux and Burgundy can find a delightfully casual wine pairing experience at Verre. The spacious bistro has around 750 wines on the menu, and an equally extensive list of dishes to complement them. Expect decadent dishes typical of French cuisine — think scallops, wagyu beef, chicken liver parfait and the like — to go with your wine. Make sure you and mum are hungry before going.

Napoleon Food & Wine Bar

This underrated wine bar is one of the coolest in town. It’s got 32 wines by the glass, each poured through Enomatic wine dispenser machines. Separated into four distinct categories — smooth, fruity, deep and spicy— there’s a wine on pour for every preference. Simple, fuss-free French dishes dominate the menu too, making this the perfect option for a mum that doesn’t enjoy frills.
