Manhattan ranks third at the World’s 50 Best Bars Awards 2018

The tenth edition of the World’s 50 Best Bars ceremony is out and Singapore has scored five spots, cementing our status as a global cocktail capital.

Breaking into the third spot up from seventh is Manhattan at the Regent Hotel, which also currently holds the title of Asia’s Best Bar. Manhattan, celebrated for its take on cocktails inspired by the eras of New York and extensive collection of American spirits, ranked third on the international list.

Ahead of Manhattan are two London-based bars that have remained top contenders on the World’s 50 Best Bars list for an age — Dandelyan at the Mondrian Hotel ranked first despite the announcement of its impending closure just two days ago, followed by the American Bar at the Savoy Hotel in second place. The American Bar was dethroned as the World’s Best Bar, a title it clinched in 2017.

Another local bar that secured a top ten placement is Atlas, now the eighth best bar in the world. The gin and champagne mecca has become a figurehead in Singapore’s bar landscape despite being just over a year old, and its reign looks set to continue well into the future.

Right after Atlas comes Native at no. 13. Run by Vijay Mudaliar, the bar specialises in creating drinks that are a reflection of the produce and spirits from Singapore and the wider Southeast Asian sphere. This year, Native shot up the list, having been 47th last year. Luke Whearty’s Operation Dagger also ascended one place on the ladder to 23rd place on the new ranking. Whearty’s bar is one of the most innovative about our city, as it has made a name for itself experimenting with fermentation, in-house distillation, and sustainable approaches to bartending.

Cocktail stanchion 28 HongKong Street completes Singapore’s presence on the World’s 50 Best Bars 2018 list, though it has fallen to 34th, when compared to it being 25th place last year.

One bar that has fallen off the scoresheet is Tippling Club. As a household name in Telok Ayer, Tippling Club’s bar and inventive cocktails have always been associated with head bartender Joe Schofield, though his recent departure and their revised cocktail menu could perhaps be the reason for its absence this year. Time will tell if its new bartender Andy Loudon will be able to revive Tippling Club’s presence next year.
