The now sub-brand of Mercedes–Benz has just released its latest in a new line of larger-than-life luxury vehicles. The new S650 Cabriolet from Mercedes-Maybach is just the thing you need for when you’re feeling a little richer than usual, and when a regular Mercedes S-Class Cabriolet just won’t cut it.
The S-Class cabriolet on which the Maybach owes its looks and proportions to, is gorgeous and has “money” written all over it. How much money? Well let’s just say, you can buy a decent-sized house for a similar amount.
The engine is a monster in size, but quiet as a whisper. Its 6.0-litre V12 produces 612hp and 1,000Nm of torque. All those horses are mated to a 7G-Tronic automatic transmission. While the engine will get you to where you want to go very quickly, the AIRMATIC suspension will ensure you glide there comfortably, and the matching luggage will mean you arrive at the lobby of the Ritz in style.
What do you get over the basic Mercedes model? A high quality, diamond quilted car cover in the same colour as the soft top, with the Maybach emblem and lettering embroidered on it. This will keep your baby warm and dust-free at night.
Other exciting additions: The key ring is made out of nappa leather, with “1 of 300” lettering and again, the Maybach emblem. You’ll also receive a signed certificate by Dr Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars.
For complete opulence, this special edition also comes with Swarovski headlights and diamond quilting on the seat side bolsters. Open the door and you’ll see the Maybach logo light up on the sill plates. If it feels like you’re in a yacht, you’re not wrong — Maybach has styled the cabin with a nautical theme, from its colour choices (which depend on the exterior hue) to the waterfall-esque perforations on the seats.
You’ll also find badging everywhere and in various forms — embroidered, embossed and inlaid — together with more chrome-plated “1 of 300” lettering on the cup holder and steering wheel. Clearly, Maybach has pulled out all the stops to stand out in the luxury performance segment.
So who is this car made for? Your industry titans and that trending hip hop star of course, as you’d really have to have more money than sense to purchase one of these over the Mercedes-AMG S 65 Cabriolet – the most exclusive S Class cabriolet currently on sale. Maybachs are known for depreciating less than gracefully, but this is a very pretty car so Mercedes should not find it difficult to move the limited run.
Visually, its exterior sees little change from the standard Mercedes. The famous Double M badge adorns the side wings and an all new bumper beautifies the front. Personally, the swankiest upgrade would be the dish-like 20-inch forged wheels.
There will be 300 Mercedes–Maybach S650 Cabriolets produced worldwide and if you’re ever so lucky, will be able to get your hands on one next spring.
