Off-road bonding: 5 luxury SUVs dad will love

Men are very serious about their toys, and when it comes to off-road cars, the bigger the better. If you’re planning a road trip with dad this Father’s Day (you should), you’ll need a vehicle that is as comfortable as it is capable for when you’re ready to hit the open road.

And not any car will do. For a trip that’s going to last more than three hours on end, you’ll want dad to be in the best mood possible when he gets to the destination. Which is why we’ve picked out some of the best luxury SUVs in the market which he might be excited to go behind the wheel of.

The selection isn’t made up of your average off-roaders; these are some of the meanest machines the outback might ever see, but they don’t compromise on luxury. Besides Maserati’s Levante, one of the most exciting additions to the already saturated market is the latest pedigree out of Lamborghini’s stable of bulls — the Urus. Then there’s the F-Pace, a combination of performance and quiet elegance. The Bentayga needs no introduction as being the most luxurious — and fastest — of them all, of course.

Here are the 5 luxury SUVs that will make dad grin the entire trip.

Lamborghini Urus

You’d be fighting with dad over who takes the wheel for this one. Lamborghini has made its concept SUV a reality with the Urus, a torquey 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 monster that’s named after the famously broad-shouldered and brawny breed of bulls. Within its coupe-like silhouette is an interior that’s not too far off from its low-slung brothers, so you’ll feel like you’re in a Huracán, but with the rest of the family. Not a bad start for a road trip.

Porsche Cayenne Turbo

A name already synonymous with luxury SUVs, the Cayenne Turbo for next season will receive the same twin-turbocharged V8 powertrain, but with improved dynamics, fuel efficiency and performance. This is because it’ll be lighter and more rigid, thanks to lashings of carbon fibre in the body. Inside, it borrows the same posh aesthetics as the Panamera, with less physical buttons and an improved touchscreen interface. Semi-autonomous features will also mean you can afford to sit back and relax a little as you embark on your adventure.

Jaguar F-Pace

Given sexy styling over a sporty silhouette, the F-Pace is like an athlete raring to show us her potential. Within the all-wheel drive is a 380hp supercharged V6, which when paired to an eight-speed automatic shift will give you acceleration times of 5.1 seconds to 100kph, and a top speed of 250kph. Its interior is well-known for being comfortably roomy and with ample cargo space, and an 11-speaker audio system comes as standard, perfect for car karaoke time. We suspect ‘road trips’ had a place on the mood board when Jaguar came up with this one.

Audi Q7

Expect lots of space and a cushy ride, only with a good dose of agility. This all-wheel drive houses a 2.0-litre turbo four that produces 252hp, with four-wheel steering and air suspension to help it stay composed regardless of terrain — should your road trip venture into an impromptu off-the-map experience. Inside this Audi is a modern and wonderful place to sit, which should be a consolation if you spend long hours on the road with siblings who are keen on annoying you.

Bentley Bentayga

Luxuriously hand-built and outfitted with a massive W12 engine, the Bentley Bentayga has bragging rights as the world’s fastest SUV. Dads who appreciate the finer things in life will feel right at home in the Mulliner version, which sees the brand take its craftsmanship level up a notch with some seriously pimped out options. Luxury aside, the SUV boasts a top speed of 301kph, and has been rigorously tested under the most extreme conditions such as the Arctic and Dubai’s dunes, so you know you’re getting one hell of a machine regardless of where you and dad go.
