Digital edge: The iMac Pro is the most powerful Mac yet

Apple promised, and they delivered. Back in June during the annual Worldwide Developers Conference, Tim Cook and friends announced the iMac Pro, the first upgrade to their range of ‘Pro’ desktops in over four years (does anyone remember the black trash bin lookalike?). And now, six months later, it’s finally in stores.

But before you jump the gun and whip out your credit card, we think you should know that the base model for the iMac Pro starts at S$7,188. It is an expensive beast that gets pricier the more you pile on upgrades, maxing out at S$19,602 with all the bells and whistles.

So what’s so good about this new computer that warrants an almost five-digit price tag?

The most powerful graphics ever in a Mac
The Playstation 4 outputs 1.84 teraflops. The iMac Pro with its Radeon Pro Vega graphics card has a horsepower of 11 teraflops. If you don’t understand that, all you need to hear is that the iMac Pro can process frames almost 6 times more than one of the best selling consoles of the decade.

iMac Pro
Rendering 4K videos and creating virtual reality worlds just got a lot easier with the iMac Pro, thanks to its fully-kitted out specs housed in its all-in-one frame.

Coupled with support for a whopping all-flash storage of 4 terabytes and 128GB of memory, you can open all the apps without having to worry about anything slowing down.

A jaw dropping display
If you thought 4K was the future, think again. The iMac Pro boasts a beautiful, stunning Retina 5K display that is 43% brighter than its predecessors. The 27-inch screen can project over a billion colours to help you fulfil your dreams in exacting detail. We can’t wait to see how a Wes Anderson flick looks like on this screen.

It also helps that there are no stray wires sticking out from behind the screen. The iMac is renowned for its all-in-one form factor, freeing up your desk from all the potential clutter. So yes, the stereo speakers, four beamforming microphones, the 1080p FaceTime camera, 4 USB and 4 Thunderbolt ports are all neatly stored on the space grey computer.

The sleek and chic new range of space grey accessories that were exclusive to buyers of the iMac Pro are now available to everyone.

With the iMac Pro comes a new set of exclusive space grey accessories as well. The Magic Mouse, Magic Trackpad, and Magic Keyboard were formerly exclusive to buyers of the desktop. But in a bid to appeal to the masses, they are now available to the public as well.

The iMac Pro is available at the Apple Store from S$7,188.
