As the price tag of the iPhone gets higher each year, casemakers are coming up with more extravagant ways to protect your handheld devices. Enter GRAY, a Singapore-based brand specialising in bold phone case designs. For the iPhone XS and its larger counterpart, the XS Max, they have designed the Alter Ego series of phone cases.

At first glance, it looks like any ordinary case that further exemplifies the X factor of the iPhone with its glaring ‘X’ design. But upon further inspection, it’s so much more. The most excessive from the range is the Aurora, an iridescently-hued case crafted from Grade 5 titanium, the same kind used for aeroplanes. At a whopping S$4,125 per case, it’s almost twice the price you’d be handing Apple for a 512GB iPhone XS Max (S$2,349).

Best served over ice.

Like other artisanal phone cases, no two cases are ever the same. After spending 12 hours in machinery getting sculpted into that cross profile, a craftsman hand-torches the case to give it the psychedelic colours that demand the hefty price. If you’re not convinced of its individuality, you can also add your name to the case and make your mark.

While it’s limited to 100 pieces worldwide, there are other colourways with the same design that are more readily available. There’s also a gold, black, and standard titanium version that might be more your fancy.
