Fritz Hansen collaborates with Nendo to launch its first entirely wooden chair in 61 years

Danish furniture design company Fritz Hansen just launched the N01 chair, which was designed in collaboration with Japanese design studio Nendo, in Singapore. This marks the first time 61 years, since Arne Jacobsen’s Grand Prix chair, that Fritz Hansen produced an entirely wooden chair.

Introduced during Milan Design Week in April, the beautiful wooden chair combines the best of Danish and Japanese aesthetics, embracing the purity of timeless wood craftsmanship.

The creation of the chair required meticulous attention to construction, with every detail of the chair fitting together as a seamless puzzle. In fact, each chair is carefully hand-assembled using 23 pieces of wood and veneer derived from a Belgian family-owned wood manufacturer founded in 1924, resulting in a sleek and seamless piece of furniture.

The N01 chair features a gently curved seat and back panel, complete with a specially designed joint that gives the impression that the shell and frame were touching each other as little as possible, in order to preserve the overall sense of lightness. It combines a seat and back in nine layers of veneer, a unique characteristic of the Fritz Hansen stacking chair collection. Its base is a pure and elegant interpretation of working with solid wood.

“Both Japanese and Danish designs have a great respect for wood as a material, and also for the craftsmanship related to this. Having this in common, in spite of the distance or cultural difference, it was possible for us to immediately ‘speak’ the same language in the process of product development,” said Oki Sato, founder of Nendo. “Last but not least, it is not designed for the sake of design. Instead, the design follows the function and the practical requirements of the chair.”

The N01 chair is available in three colours, namely Black Oak, Natural Oak and Beech, with optional seat cushions in fabric or leather. It’s now available from S$1,135 at W. Atelier, a homegrown brand carrying a curated selection of luxury home furnishings and accessories in Singapore.
