How to embrace the maximalist interiors trend without looking too cluttered

For years now, minimalistic interiors have dominated the narrative with its simple decor, an off-white palette and a notably Scandinavian visual language.

But in 2019, a new era of extravagance has arrived — welcome to the maximalist world of ‘more is more’. Some may call it a response to the oppressive times we live in – like the flamboyance of the French court in Versailles – or perhaps a desire for self-expression, but maximalism is making a comeback in living spaces everywhere.

Not all maximalist interior spaces are gilded in gold and encrusted in diamonds – this never-hold-back trend is a delight for many reasons. Think vibrant colours that enliven the space and your mood, and you can rule-break to your heart’s content. Life at home is about more than form and function. And clutter is not a problem as long as you do it the right way.

Maximalism is a style that can be embraced in stages; you don’t have to go nose-diving straight in – just the right amount of pizzazz to stir up the emotions. Here are ways to work the maximalist look at home.

Retro Palette

With maximalism, you can indulge in any decade and historical references for inspiration. Update your bedroom with a French boudoir theme from the neo-classicism period or the velveteen sheen of the 70s for some extra shimmer in your room. Colours like bubblegum pink, coral and dusty hues are all the rage this season. (Image: Brabbu)

Wall of Frames

If you only have one statement piece at home, it’s time to multiply that by ten. Line up prints, paintings and posters altogether and experiment with spacing, colour, motifs and different frames to get the eclectic effect. (Image: Source)

Print-mania

There’s no better time to up your wallpaper game. Forget the white walls and monotonous stripy prints. Shop for unique prints with a touch of luxe or quirkiness (like this one from Moooi that is inspired by extinct creatures) to create a conversational nook at home. (Image: Source)

Go Gaga on Greens

No, we are not talking about plants in the sense of an artfully placed succulent. Maximalism calls for you going wild on the foliage front – the more the better. Spruce up the common areas of your home with an assortment of plants. Hanging options can add more visual interest into your home. (Image: Source)

Add accessories

If you’ve been collecting fabrics, cushion covers and all sorts of home accessories, this is your time to let it all out. Layer each corner with exuberant colours, textures and volume. Every now and then, move things around to change the dynamics of the space. Remember, anything goes. (Image: Source)
