Your alternative Christmas playlist for this festive season

Every party needs a good playlist, and every Christmas party needs a playlist without Mariah Carey. Let’s face it, the malls are probably blasting ‘All I want for Christmas is You’ in sync at this point, and your home party playlist doesn’t need to do the same.

For starters, we’ve gathered some of our favourite tunes that don’t involve Mariah or a certain Mr Buble. These modern Christmas songs are fit for the perfect alternative playlist you’ve always wanted: from hip hop to dance tracks and party pop anthems, there is sure to be something on this list for everyone’s musical taste.

It’s Christmas! by Z-stars

Z-boys and Z-girls have come together as Z-stars this festive season for a new single: It’s Christmas!. If the exclamation mark is any clue, this cute jingle is an explosion of sweetness from the members chiming “It’s Christmas baby”.

You’re A Mean One, Mr Grinch by Tyler the Creator

This moody number is funky, fun and speckled with clever lyrics. The updated 2018 version adds drums, strings, Tyler’s unmistakable baritone and a chorus of children to create a sort of rhythmic appeal that leaves listeners bopping their head to the beat.

Like It’s Christmas by Jonas Brothers

One of the best band reunions of the year goes to Jonas Brothers and the boys are getting into the holiday spirit with their single ‘Like it’s Chrismas’. Handclaps set the beat for the song, accompanied by bells twinkling in the background for a sprinkle of extra Christmas cheer. With lyrics like “You make every day feel like it’s Christmas/Never want to stop” this festive tune is one upbeat anthem for any Christmas playlist.

Hey Sis, it’s Christmas by RuPaul

This seasonal bop from RuPaul needs no explanation. Take a listen and you will sure to be screaming ‘Hey sis, it’s Christmas/ You can cross me off of your wish list’ on the floor in no time. Dancing drag queen not included.

I Want To Come Home For Christmas by Marvin Gaye

Maybe your party is a private one for two, made only complete with sensual jazz numbers. The 1972 groove is honeyed by the croons of Marvin Gaye, and the old school bass guitar strums make for a highly passionate evening.

Winter Things by Ariana Grande

The strumming of a casual ukelele accompanies Ariana’s unique voice in this 2015 festive song, Winter Things. The folky number stands out from many of the singer’s usual tracks, and lyrics like “My baby’s in town and we’re gonna do some winter things”, remind us of the old Ariana during her younger days as a Nickelodeon star.

Make It To Christmas by Alessia Cara

23-year-old Alessia Cara has finally joined the festive songs with ‘Make It to Christmas’ this year. The song showcases her chilling voice with beautiful reverbs in the background and includes a fun pop-style chorus that goes: “Darling, I know our love is going cold, but there’s just something about the snow this time of year that makes us lose our way.”
