This week’s best stories: Design Miami/Basel 2018, The Carters, and silent retreats

We are more than midway through June, and what an eventful month it has been. The past week alone saw several momentous highlights in the form of the World’s 50 Best Restaurants reveal — where Singapore’s Odette flew our flag high by coming in 28th on the prestigious list — and designer Virgil Abloh’s showcase of his first collection for Louis Vuitton. Then there was the news that L’oreal and Isabel Marant have teamed up on a makeup line set to launch in September.

Closer to home, yet another eatery — specifically a fast food chain — has made the commitment to phase out plastic straws and lids for its drinks at all of its 84 outlets here. It joins the ranks of establishments such as Six Senses Duxton in eschewing single-use plastic straws, which pollute the environment. If you’re leaning towards this eco-friendly way of life too, we suggest checking out our guide to stylish reusable straws here.

The 2018 FIFA World Cup has also seen unexpectedly thrilling games after only eight days. To note: Japan won against Colombia, once-strong Argentina crumbled against team Croatia with a 3-0 loss right after drawing with Icelandics, team Iran’s upset when a crucial goal was disallowed, and Mexico beating defending champions Germany in their game-opener. It’s no wonder Mexico City suffered an artificial man-made earthquake as soon as striker Hirving Lozano scored the winning goal against the Germans. This World Cup is indeed shaping up to be a good one.
