It’s safe to say that scalp care is the least of my concerns when it comes to haircare.
While I have taken steps to try and be better at it with custom shampoo, conditioner and the occasional weekend hair mask, I find myself neglecting the concerns of my scalp. Above all, the term scalp care often conjures images of middle-aged women with thinning hair and a blatantly visible scalp, and that certainly didn’t feel like it was applicable to me. That is, not until I got a shock when I noticed a burgeoning white parting in the middle of my crown.
There was no time to waste. Rather than choosing to restore my hair in the future, I very much prefer putting a stop to this before its too late.
Thankfully, PHS HAIRSCIENCE reached out for a chance to try out their Signature Daily Regime, a three-step routine that’s not just formulated for women with mild hair loss and thinning concerns, it also serves useful to those who want to prevent premature hair loss. I was sceptical at first, to say the least, but spoiler alert: I don’t think it really does get any better than this. Read on for the full review.
There are three (well, technically four) steps to the Signature Daily Regime. After washing your hair twice with two different shampoos, you’ve got your tame your mane with a conditioner and then treat it with a tonic.
Before I started the program, that sounded like a lot of work: after all, my usual routine consists only of a shampoo and a conditioner. Yet, between a four-step hair program and a daily ten-step skincare routine, it suddenly didn’t feel like it was going to be that much worse, and I quickly got used to the rhythm of the regime.
I’ve been double cleansing my face for years now — along with just about everyone else with even the slightest interest in skincare, but hair? While it may come across as a gimmick that companies use to get you through your bottles faster, it really did make logical sense to me. The same way double-cleansing my face allows me to first remove makeup and grime, then do a deeper clean, perhaps double-shampooing could do the same.
The first step? The ADV Nutrition Shampoo for all scalp types.
In here, you’ll find a mix of the Patent 5 Complex (a blend of natural, botanical ingredients like the honey locust, Chinese cucumber, marsh parsley, angelica dahurica root extract and adzuki bean), purslane extract for some moisture, and rice stem cells to promote scalp circulation.
With the ADV Nutrition Shampoo, you’ll be armed with the essential ingredients to remove unhealthy buildup in your hair follicles, scalp moisture balance and improves barrier functions, as well as to prevent inflammations.
The second cleanse makes use of the FEM Fortify Shampoo, uniquely formulated to energise and rehabilitate the scalp to reduce hair fall, as well as provide hair follicles with the essential nutrients to fight hair thinning.
In it, you’ll find a combination of the same Patent 5 Complex, rice stem cells and walnut extract to strengthen hair follicles. Both cleansing products pump out a rosin-brown hue, and the menthol-esque sensation left my scalp feeling cool and invigorated for the day. Did I mention it doesn’t contain parabens, benzophenone, mineral oil or artificial colourants?
Shampoos are a risky item to change in your routine, especially after you’ve gotten used to a particular one. Far too often have I been subject to a minefield of dandruff and glimmers of oil after trying out new products, so I went into the beginning of the regime a little hesitant than most. Thankfully, my tresses didn’t react the same way after the switch.
Next came the FEM Fortify Conditioner. I managed to tune out the knots from my hair with the thick cream, crafted with tomato stem cells, milk protein extract and sweet almond extract to reduce hair breakage and strengthen my hair. The ease in which my hairbrush combed through my mane is proof enough to signal how effective the product is.
Once in a while, I’ll head to the salon for a much-needed treatment session, but mainly for the bottom of my locks. Besides, after years of damage from bleach and dye, that seemed like the most applicable one. That, and the fact that I was certainly not going to go through the shame of slathering my scalp with a natural mud-green concoction at the salon in my 20s, proved to be the main reason why I never chose to do a scalp treatment outside. This is also why the FEM Fortify tonic comes in particularly handy.
This 100ml bottle of FEM Fortify tonic is the last of the regime. The spritz is concocted with lotus stem cells that heals and strengthens hair follicles as well as oat extract, which helps to lost proteins necessary for hair tissue growth.
After giving the bottled-treatment a good shake, simply section your hair and spray it directly. Give your scalp a good fingertip massage to really get the minty product in there, and you’re good to go. As it is a leave-on tonic, I usually wrap my hair in a towel so that it continues to dry as I put on my makeup.
I’ve used the Signature Daily Regime religiously for three weeks for the review, and to be honest, I’ve been using the products continuously since then. The difference it made was pretty noticeable.
Apart from close friends and family pointing out how the crown of my head looked significantly fuller, I could see the difference for myself too. The gaping white valley, stemmed from years of using the same hair parting, is now bridged with new follicles of baby hair — even when I thought it impossible.
My scalp was significantly less greasy, even in Singapore’s humidity, and I noticed a smaller bunch of hair monsters pooling at the bottom of my shower. All things considered, although I spent a conscientious amount of time dedicated to my haircare, it really did pay off.
We hate to sound like a broken record, or your mom, but prevention really is better than cure. If you’re looking to adopt a habit of scalp care at the early stage, or just want a solution to your a proven haircare routine that actually works, here is a solution.
