Van Cleef & Arpels celebrates the beauty of the Christmas rose with its holiday jewels

The dead of winter may seem like an unlikely time for a flower to bloom, but that’s exactly when you’ll spot the snowy petals of the Hellebore.

You’ll also find the resilient flower, otherwise known as the Christmas rose, at the heart of two jewellery collections from Van Cleef & Arpels this holiday season.

The first is Rose de Noël, a collection that the French jeweller actually introduced many winters ago in the 1970s. As its name suggests, the collection was a tribute to the Christmas rose, capturing its beauty in diamonds, yellow gold and coral. The floral motif has since graced clips, pendants and earrings in different sizes and materials.

A classic, reimagined

For the new collection, the Rose de Noël motif is now mini-sized, blooming in two distinctive shades — the lustrous white of mother-of-pearl and the intense blue of lapis lazuli. The beauty of these blossoms are just as impressive as their craftsmanship: each glossy petal is crafted and polished by hand, before being carefully assembled on a yellow gold mount.

Van Cleef & Arpels has unveiled a pendant and a pair of earrings for each stone, which, despite the painstaking process of creating them, are very wearable. And while the real Christmas rose would eventually wither, the Rose de Noël designs are truly timeless.

Van Cleef & Arpels is even bringing back a handful of coral designs that resemble the original Rose de Noël pieces, despite the rarity of the organic gemstone.

A new signature

The Maison makes room for the new just as much as the old. This season, it’s introducing the Hellébore jewellery collection, which also has a starting point in the Christmas rose.

The new line, however, brings an extra dose of shine with its abundant use of sparkling diamonds. These complement the glimmer of the lapis lazuli, mother-of-pearl and turquoise stones featured throughout the Hellébore pieces, such as a necklace, a clip and rings.

The collection is also as light as it is bright. The flowers are made with a delicate, openwork structure, allowing light to pass through each carefully picked diamond. This sense of airiness balances the extravagance of their gems, making the Hellébore collection a lot more modern.

The contemporary feel is also emphasised by the pieces’ asymmetrical, overlapping petals, which were achieved by the trained hands and sharp-eyed precision of Van Cleef & Arpels’ craftsmen.

Both the new Rose de Noël and Hellébore collections are a testament to Van Cleef & Arpels’ ability to draw from its rich heritage and reimagine its icons for the present day. That, and the impeccable craftsmanship seen throughout the new designs, are what set the French luxury brand apart from other jewellers that also look to nature for inspiration.

In Van Cleef & Arpels’ case, its profound appreciation of nature is felt in each beautiful jewellery creation. The pieces are truly a work of art on their own.
