What is it about Christmas that makes people want to wear the most ugly sweaters they can find?
Perhaps it’s because no matter how awful they look on the outside, they still feel good on the inside. They are cosy knits made with the likes of wool, mohair and cashmere, after all; all you have to do is to pull them over your head and bam, there’s your holiday outfit.
As a year as long as 2020 comes to an end, most of us would like nothing more than to take a break. That includes getting rid of the fuss of thinking too hard about what to wear at our socially-distanced festive gatherings and Christmas dinners. You just want to stuff yourself silly on delicious roast turkey or your favourite desserts, which a regular jumper lets you do comfortably.
A stylish jumper, however, will make your fellow guests appreciate your company even better. You wouldn’t want to be assaulting their senses at the dinner table with your garish choice of clothing, would you?
Picking out tasteful sweaters was something that Princess Diana knew all about. That’s something we learned from The Crown, which has reminded us of what made her a style icon in the first place.
She had an array of Christmas sweaters that she wore out in broad daylight. The most famous one is the sheep sweater, which has now been brought back thanks to our renewed interest in the late Princess of Wales. But she also had festive sweaters decorated with reindeer, as well as an array of Fair Isle cardigans (fun fact: these were actually first popularised by another royal, King Edward VII). What they had in common is that they were all just the right amount of fun, festive and fashionable.
That’s what we hope you aspire to wear this holiday season as you go forth in your merry-making. To help you out, we’ve hand-picked all the best Christmas sweaters you can get your hands on right now. Check them out below.

This one’s a conversation starter. Hedi Slimane designed this sweater for TikTok kids who, between recreating Harry Styles’ patchwork cardigan and bringing back the sweater vest, are really big on knits. If you can relate, you’ll appreicate this Celine wool-jacquard sweater featuring 8-bit avatars doing that other thing TikTok kids love: dancing.

If you’re going for something casual, try this striped sweater from Dior. It’s a lightweight piece — it’s made from linen, silk and cashmere — and would look great tucked into a pair of jeans. The sweater also spreads some Christmas cheer: the front is covered with the message “I love you” in 38 languages.

Sure, this Gucci sweater is bordering on grandma chic, but style it with a leather mini skirt and you’ll fit right in with the times. With its traditional check design spelling out the Italian brand’s name, this is a piece that you can keep in your wardrobe beyond the holiday season.

Looking for a top that doesn’t scream “It’s Christmas!” but is still appropriate for your festive celebrations? Beyond The Vines has just the thing. This sweater comes in the same shade of green as holly trees, and it’s crafted from soft cotton terry, making it one of the lighter knits on this list.

We love that this Molly Goddard sweater is both fun and festive while still being very easy to pull off. It’s made with a sheer rib knit that features Goddard’s signature ruching. The result is an unconventional silhouette that has all the flamboyance of a Christmas tree. In other words, it’s perfect for the holidays.

Marine Serre’s sustainable design ethos has led her to seek out Fair-Isle wool scraps that can be upcycled for her take on the Christmas sweater. The French designer combined them with fabrics featuring an edgy lizard print, which replaced her signature moons for Fall/Winter 2020. The result is a one-of-a-kind knit that will inject a dose of cool into your holiday looks.

A little bling is more than welcome during December’s festivities, which is why we recommend this Christopher Kane merino wool sweater. It’s adorned with tiny crystals that will have you twinkling like a Christmas tree, but not too much that you can’t style the turtleneck with your go-to work trousers for the office next year.

Florals for winter — why not? This Miu Miu jumper feature rows and rows of them in the style of a Christmas sweater, making it just a tiny bit kitschy. You can elevate it with a more sensible pair of shoes (those leather loafers from sister brand Prada, for example) and remove the poplin collar for a more grown-up look.

For sweater weather beyond Christmastime, you’ll want this Love Bonito pullover. It’s just thick enough to keep you warm, but it also manages to be really chic, what with its puff sleeves and statement wrist ties. That bright shade of red is also a merry touch.

If you don’t mind dressing the same way as several other stylish women this holiday season, consider getting this cult piece from Alexachung. It’s made with mohair and alpaca wool, and comes in hues that croon, “I’m having a blue Christmas.” It’s not entirely a bad thing, if you have this sweater. It-girl Alexa herself recommends wearing it with a pair of leather pants, so you’ll at least be the coolest person in the room.
