Known for her diverse and unique take on electric, hip hop, and dance music, Los Angeles-based DJ TOKiMONSTA (aka Jennifer Lee), is in Singapore to work her magic at ZoukOut 2016. Her upbringing in classical music has enabled her to infuse time-honoured sensibilities with modern qualities — creating vast and unprecedented soundscapes.
Before she shows ZoukOut-goers what she’s made of on Saturday, we catch up with Tokimonsta on fashion, her luggage collection, and possibly working in a video game company.
My first fashion memory was… when I saw old photos of my mum with Pierre Cardin (the designer) in Korea in the ’60s. She was a fashion designer then.
My personal style is… comfortable, chic and street.
Over the years, my job and interests have affected the way I dress, as… art, music, and fashion are all intertwined — they have a symbiotic relationship with each other. A specific type of music can influence what you feel like putting on your back, and vice versa. I’ve learned to find my own style, and come to love hats and unique sunglasses — both of which I’m known for.
If my music were to be associated with a fashion brand, it will definitely be… Saint Laurent. As a well-respected fashion house with a long history, they continue to create edgy and modern collections which appeal very much to the world today.
The last thing I splurged on was a… Goyard wallet.
This weekend at ZoukOut, I think people should wear… whatever they want! It’s less about trying to impress others, but more about expressing yourselves. Go as yourself — that’s my rule.
If I weren’t a record producer and DJ, I’d probably be… working in a video game company.
TOKiMonsta will play at ZoukOut 2016 on 10 December, 2016.
