Trends come and go. If Kanye West once emailed Kim Kardashian a trend memo on the pressing relevancy of “tiny little glasses”, these Matrix-inspired accessories have reached its zenith and are well on the brink of over-saturation, if not already. So what’s next? What will replace the diminutive perch on the tip of our noses?
Enter: the Gentle Monster x Alexander Wang shades.
South Korean brand Gentle Monster, also known as the leading proselytiser for experimental eyewear, linked up with New York’s devisor of cool Alexander Wang for an alternative in their own riff on the classic rectangular cut. From framing Audrey Hepburn’s sculpted cheekbones to providing that extra oomph to Madonna’s leather-laden looks, the full-coverage style has stood the test of time.
Gentle Monster and Wang’s though, is a 21st century hybrid of ultra-skinny shades’ compressed silhouette and the timeless boxiness of square frames. Available in red, yellow and black, the frames bear the wit-packed term “CEO” — an allusion to Wang’s inspiration for his Fall 2018 collection. They were first debuted at the presentation of said collection earlier this year, modelled by the #WangGang between the corporate cubicles of Four Times Square’s 21st floor office.
Five months prior to said show, Wang stepped down as the CEO of his eponymous brand. While he’s no longer in the boardroom, the CEO shades became the definitive topper to his slick bid for power-dressing — confidently giving the Matrix shades a run for their money.
The Gentle Monster x Alexander Wang CEO eyewear collection retails for S$408 and is slated to drop on 8 September at Gentle Monster Ion Orchard store.
