There’s a high chance you’ve stumbled upon the Ark — the signature half-moon bag of Los Angeles-based label Cult Gaia — somewhere within your daily Instagram scroll. Probably toted by your favourite cool girls or set perched on a coffee table as the warm rays of the golden hour slice through its bamboo strips, composing an artistic shadow play that’s an instant magnet to double taps. Several seasons after the Ark was released in 2016, it remains, still, as the cult bag of the fashion set.
If the Jane Birkin-esque accessory ever gets you searching for a footwear equivalent, seek no further: Cult Gaia has just introduced its very first shoe line.
This came a little over a year after the unveiling of its ready-to-wear line. Now extending the brand’s perennial summer aesthetic into footwear, designer and founder Jasmin Larian posited four shoe designs inspired by home ground California’s penchant for vintage.
The secret to the label’s blown-up popularity can be whittled down to Larian’s clear and precise vision that takes centre stage in her designs. Of her new footwear creations, she says: “Every detail is intentional and the goal was to strike a balance between a wearable, timeless piece that also offers a standout moment.”
Said goal, conquered. Just one look and you can more or less pinpoint what Larian has in mind. The easy Alia mid-heel mules are tailored for the Cult Gaia girl’s light, sun-dappled strolls. The sculptural Luna stiletto, destined for her beach-bound fetes. The strappy Sienna sandals, her exotic summer getaways. Most notably, though, they share that carbon-copy photogenic quality — it’s the Ark in shoe form, putting its best foot forward.
The first Cult Gaia shoe collection is now available exclusively on Net-a-Porter.
